Can You Survive Living in Panama?

2/23/2025

WARNING: Life in Panama may cause excessive relaxation, an addiction to fresh seafood, and an inability to tolerate cold weather ever again. Proceed with caution!
Have you ever wondered if you could actually survive living in Panama? Well, let’s find out with this definitive 10-step survival test. If you think you can handle it, you just might be cut out for life in the tropics.

10 - Surviving… Year-Round Tropical Weather
Let’s start with the obvious: Can you handle living in a place where it’s always summer? No more shoveling snow, scraping ice off your windshield, or wearing five layers just to check the mail. Instead, you’ll be “suffering” through 80-degree breezes every single day. If warm, tropical weather offends you… Panama may not be for you.

9 - Surviving… In-Home Spa Treatments
Picture this: You’re in your apartment, the ocean breeze drifts through the open balcony, and a professional masseuse is working out all the stress you used to have before moving to Panama. Can you handle a world where in-home massages cost less than a casual lunch out? If not, maybe stick to that overpriced chair massage at the mall.

8 - Surviving… Cheap Domestic Services
In Panama, it’s completely normal to have regular maid service. Some expats splurge and have a weekly maid, while others have jumped all-in and employed a full-time maid. At $25 to $40 a day, you don’t have to be a billionaire to live the lifestyle of the rich and famous. Imagine never scrubbing a toilet, mopping a floor, or folding laundry ever again. If letting someone else handle the chores while you sip a piña colada on your balcony sounds too stressful… well, consider yourself warned.

7️ - Surviving… The Golf Course Dilemma
Panama is home to 11 golf courses—many with spectacular ocean or mountain views. The real challenge? Deciding which world-class course to play on any given day. If facing an endless lineup of lush fairways sounds too overwhelming, you might want to rethink your survival skills.

6️ - Surviving… An Overload of Fresh Seafood
Ever had lobster for lunch on a Tuesday just because it was cheap and fresh? Can you endure unlimited ceviche, shrimp, and grilled fish straight from the ocean—without your wallet suffering cardiac arrest? If the thought of affordable, top-quality seafood sends shivers down your spine, you may be in trouble.

5️ - Surviving… Restaurants That Actually Remember You
Unlike big cities where you’re just another anonymous customer, Panama’s restaurant scene is personal. The waitstaff remember your name, your favorite dish, and even how you like your coffee. If you prefer bland chain restaurants where nobody cares… then Panama could be too much for you.

4️ - Surviving… The Low Cost of Living
Imagine your carrying costs are just a tiny fraction of what you’d pay in North America, your healthcare bill doesn’t require a second mortgage, and dining out every night actually makes financial sense. If spending less money on more luxury is a burden… good luck.

3️ - Surviving… A Laid-Back Lifestyle
Life in Panama moves at a different pace. Things take time, people actually enjoy their coffee breaks, and nobody is in a rush to stress out. If you thrive on road rage and office burnout, this might be your breaking point.

2️ - Surviving… Making New Friends Instantly
Expats in Panama are friendly. Really friendly. You’ll find yourself meeting new people at happy hour, in the grocery store, even at the dog park. If you prefer cold, distant social interactions—well, Panama might be a bit too welcoming for you.

1️ - Surviving… Never Wanting to Leave
Here’s the ultimate survival test: Once you get here, you won’t want to leave. Vacations back to your home country will feel like trips to the frozen tundra, and every time you check real estate prices elsewhere, you’ll laugh. OUT. Loud. If you’re not ready to fall in love with paradise… better stay put.

Final Score: Did You Pass the Panama Survival Test?
If you made it through all 10 points without running for the hills, congratulations! You just might be able to survive the ultimate challenge—enjoying your new life in Panama.

Thanks for tuning in. I’d love to stay and chat but… my masseuse is here.

See you in Panama!

Unveiling Panama's Most Spectacular Festivals & Holidays

2/19/2025

Have you ever been to a party that lasts for days? Or a celebration so vibrant you can feel the energy in your bones? Welcome to Panama—where festivals aren’t just events, they’re experiences. In this episode, we’re unveiling Panama’s top 10 festivals and holidays, taking you from the colorful streets of Panama City to the lively rural towns where traditions come alive. Whether you’re here to dance, eat, or soak up the culture, these celebrations will leave you in awe. Put your party hat on—it’s going to be a joyful ride!

1. New Year's Eve and New Year’s Day
Let’s kick things off with a bang! New Year’s Eve in Panama is next level. New Year’s Day is the official holiday, but the festivities start the day before. Even before midnight, Fireworks light up the skies from the city to the beaches, and it’s not just a quick 5-minute show—this is a spectacle that lasts for hours, with some of the fireworks so close you can almost reach out and touch them. Families gather, music blares, and if you’re near the Panama Canal, you can catch some epic waterfront displays. It’s the perfect way to welcome a fresh start with friends, food, and a little fire in the sky.

2. Martyrs' Day
Panama takes its history seriously, and Martyrs' Day on January ninth is a somber but important reminder of the country’s fight for sovereignty. It commemorates the tragic events of 1964, when student protests over control of the Panama Canal Zone led to a clash with U.S. forces. While it’s not a festival with dancing or fireworks, it’s a powerful day of reflection and patriotism. Expect ceremonies and tributes honoring those who sacrificed for Panama’s independence. It’s also important to note that no alcohol is sold on Martyr’s Day, so if you want a sunset cocktail, you’ll need to stock up the day before.

3. Boquete Flower and Coffee Festival
What do you get when you combine flowers, coffee, and mountain views? Pure magic. In the highlands of Boquete, this 10-day festival each January showcases stunning floral displays and, of course, some of the best coffee you’ll ever taste. You can wander through gardens, sample local brews, and soak up the cool mountain air. It’s a feast for the senses—perfect for nature lovers and caffeine enthusiasts alike. If this sounds like fun, be sure to make your hotel reservations early, as the whole town sells-out of accommodations during this fun festival.

4. Carnival
Panama’s Carnival is legendary. Think Rio de Janeiro meets Mardi Gras, but with a Panamanian twist. For four days leading up to Ash Wednesday, the entire country turns into a massive party. There are colorful parades, extravagant costumes, live music, and cisternas—giant water trucks that spray the crowd to keep everyone cool in the tropical heat. Whether you’re dancing in Panama City or you’re in the heart of the Carnival Zone in Las Tablas in the interior region, Carnival is an experience you’ll never forget.

5. Semana Santa: Panama’s Holy Week
Holy Week is celebrated across Panama with religious processions and reenactments of the Passion of Christ. It starts on Palm Sunday—the Sunday before Easter—and ends on Easter Sunday. Alcohol is not sold on Maundy Thursday—the day that commemorates Jesus’ Last supper—or on Good Friday—the day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The most famous procession takes place in the town of Pesé, where the entire community gets involved. It’s a deeply spiritual experience, even for visitors. If you’re not into crowds, this is also the perfect time to relax. In fact, most business are closed and many locals take a break from the hustle and bustle to spend time with family during this sacred week.

6. Labor Day
Labor Day is celebrated on May 1st and honors the contributions of workers across Panama. It’s a national holiday marked by parades, speeches, and events organized by labor unions. Most businesses, government offices, and schools close for the day, giving workers a well-deserved break.
In major cities like Panama City and Colón, you’ll see marches and demonstrations advocating for workers' rights, while in smaller towns, it’s a more relaxed day for rest and family gatherings. It’s a moment to appreciate hard work and the role it plays in shaping Panama’s economy and society.

7. Fiestas Patrias: Panama’s Patriotic Holidays
Panama’s Fiestas Patrias isn’t just one celebration—it’s a month-long series of patriotic holidays filled with history, pride, and unforgettable festivities. It all begins on November 2nd with the Day of the Dead. This is a solemn day intended to honor and remember deceased loved ones. This holiday is a quiet, reflective time when out of respect, no alcohol is sold or served.

The celebrations then kick into high gear the next day, on November 3rd, with Independence from Colombia Day, followed by Colón Day on November 5th, which commemorates the key role Colón played in securing independence. On November 10th, Panama observes the Cry of Independence, marking the first call for freedom from Spanish rule in 1821. Finally, the month rounds out with Independence from Spain Day on November 28th.

Throughout November, Panama comes alive with parades, music, and cultural events. Marching bands fill the streets, dancers in traditional dress twirl with pride, and communities across the country gather to celebrate their rich heritage. From major parades in Panama City to festivities in rural towns, Fiestas Patrias showcases Panama’s spirit like no other time of year. And if you love pageantry, music, and vibrant celebrations, this is your moment! One thing to note if you’re staying or around Panama City, is that there are many road closures to accommodate all the parades and festivities.

8. Mother's Day
Mother’s Day in Panama is celebrated on December 8th and is one of the most significant holidays of the year. Families go all out to honor moms with flowers, gifts, and big gatherings. Many businesses shut down for the day so that families can spend time together. Restaurants are fully booked, and the atmosphere is warm and joyful. This is a time to celebrate the heart of the family, and you’ll feel the love and appreciation everywhere you go.

9. National Mourning Day
On December 20th, Panama observes National Mourning Day to remember the tragic events of the 1989 U.S. military invasion of Panama, known as Operation Just Cause. This day honors the victims and reflects on a pivotal moment in the country’s history. National mourning day serves as an important time of remembrance for Panamanians. As with the other somber holidays, alcohol is neither sold nor served.

10. Christmas Holidays
The Christmas season in Panama is filled with joy, family gatherings, and festive traditions. Many companies close mid-December and people spend their time shopping and eating, which means traffic is much heavier than normal. However the official start of Christmas isn’t until December 24th. Starting with Christmas Eve, families come together to share a big meal, often featuring tamales, lechón (which is a flavorful slow-roasted pork), and other traditional dishes. At midnight, fireworks light up the sky to celebrate the birth of Christ.
The festivities continue through Christmas Day, with more family gatherings and religious services. The warm, welcoming atmosphere, beautiful decorations, and lively celebrations make this a special time to be in Panama.

Closing
Panama’s festivals and holidays are as diverse and vibrant as the country itself. From reflective moments of history to all-night celebrations, there’s something for everyone. If you’re planning a trip—or even thinking about making Panama your home—be sure to experience these incredible events for yourself.
Thanks for tuning in to The Panama Podcast!

Until next time, see you in Panama!

Boquete: Panama's COOLEST Expat Area Gets 2 AMAZING New Projects!

2/12/2025

Imagine waking up to cool mountain air, faintly scented with plumeria blossoms. You throw on a sweatshirt and your favorite pair of shorts. Although it will warm up to tank top weather by mid-morning, the sweatshirt feels good in the crisp morning air. You sip a cup of freshly brewed world-class coffee while gazing at breathtaking views of lush green valleys. You try to categorize all the shades of green while listening to the morning songs of parrots, toucans and warblers. No, this isn’t a dream. This could be your reality in Boquete, Panama—one of the most desirable places in the world for expat retirees.

Today, we’re diving deep into two exciting new real estate opportunities in Boquete that might just be perfect for you. Whether you want a luxurious mountain retreat or a central spot near all the action, I’ve got you covered. Stick around because these properties are game-changers, and you won’t want to miss all the juicy details.

Overview of Boquete
Before we get to the properties, let’s talk about what makes Boquete such a special place. Known as the “Land of Eternal Spring,” Boquete offers year-round temperatures between 68 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Boquete is nestled in the Panama highlands at about 3,900 feet above sea level. It’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with activities like hiking, birdwatching, and even ziplining through cloud forests.

Boquete is also famous for its vibrant expat community. Here, you’ll find farmers’ markets, social clubs, and cultural events that make it easy to connect with like-minded people. Add to that an affordable cost of living, access to fresh local food, and some of the best coffee in the world, and you’ll quickly see why so many people are calling Boquete home. If you want to learn more about Boquete, watch this video next.

Now that you know what makes this town such a gem, let’s explore two real estate options that could make living in Boquete your new reality.

Number 1 - PINOALTO by Empresas Bern
PINOALTO is a luxury development located within the iconic Boquete Country Club. This project’s first phase consists of 34 fully furnished units ranging from 95 to 145 square meters—that’s about one thousand square feet to about fifteen hundred and sixty square feet. You can choose between two- or three-bedroom floor plans, all equipped with high-end kitchens, two full bathrooms, and breathtaking views of the canyon.

Located near the equestrian center and health spa in Boquete Country Club, PINOALTO offers an upscale lifestyle surrounded by nature. This project includes all the amenities you would expect from a world-class project. It has swimming pools, hot tubs, fire pits, a reading and coffee room, and even a hammock area for the ultimate in relaxation. But it doesn’t stop there. It also has an onsite restaurant and lookout areas.

But wait, there’s more. It will even have an onsite medical facility. If you’re a retiree, this is a game changer. You—and your loved ones back home—can rest assured that medical help is available… when you need it.
Prices start at just $350,000 for fully furnished residences.

If you’re thinking about financing, Empresas Bern makes it easy with developer financing. There’s no pre-approval process… and you can secure your unit with just 50% down.

The project is slated for completion in late 2025, so if this sounds like your dream home, contact us to get more information!

Number 2: Boquete Town Center by Emporium Developers
Boquete Town Center, developed by Emporium Developers, is perfect for anyone who wants to be in the heart of it all. Located on Avenida Central in the center of Boquete, you’ll be steps away from restaurants, shopping, and vibrant community events. This development offers the convenience of modern living right in downtown Boquete.

Not only does it have all the top-notch amenities you would expect—such as a gym, a co-working space, and a party room—but it will also have an entire level of commercial stores on the ground level. These will include products and services you need every day, and will most likely include a coffee shop, café, dry cleaners, pet store and more.

Units here range from 66 to 96 square meters—which is about seven hundred to just over a thousand square feet— in layouts that have one, two, or three-bedrooms. Emporium Developers are known for their luxury finishes. To make this project even more appealing, all the units come fully furnished and equipped.
Before you think that this lifestyle is out of reach, make sure you’re sitting down. You can live where others vacation with prices starting at just $215,000.

Payment plans are easy, with the first 30% being paid in stages. You won’t need to pay the balance until the project is completed in about 2027.

Imagine being able to walk to your favorite coffee shop or join a local festival without needing to drive. Boquete Town Center offers you the best of both worlds: a laid-back lifestyle with all the conveniences right at your doorstep.

Comparison and Final Thoughts
Both PINOALTO and Boquete Town Center offer incredible opportunities, but they cater to different lifestyles. If you’re looking for rustic tranquility, and access to immediate medical care, PINOALTO is calling your name. On the other hand, if you want to immerse yourself in the vibrant heartbeat of Boquete, then Boquete Town Center might be the perfect fit.

Either way, you can’t go wrong with investing in Boquete. Its perfect climate, welcoming community, and stunning natural beauty make it one of the top places to live in Panama. And with property values steadily increasing, it’s also a smart investment.

Thinking about making the move? My team and I are here to guide you through every step of the process—whether you're looking for a luxury retreat, a downtown escape, or something in between.

If you have questions or want to learn more about these properties, reach out to us directly by clicking here.

Panama Emergency Care: What You Need to Know in a Crisis!

2/8/2025

Thinking about moving to Panama? One of the biggest concerns on your mind is probably--What happens in an emergency? Don’t worry, we've got you covered! Panama’s healthcare system is reliable, accessible, and surprisingly affordable. In this episode, we’re breaking down the Top 10 things you absolutely need to know about emergency care in Panama. Normally, I love a good countdown, but this topic is too important to save the best for last—so we’re tackling it in order of importance, giving you exactly what you need, right when you need it. Whether you’re planning a visit or making the big move, be sure to save this episode—because when an emergency strikes, you’ll want to be prepared. Let’s get you emergency-ready!

#1 - Emergency Numbers
Panama has a universal emergency number, 911, which connects you to police, fire, and medical assistance. You can also dial 104 for the Police and 103 for a Fire related emergency. It’s important to note that you must have a Panama phone number for these emergency numbers to work. Many phones will allow you to have a second SIM or eSIM from Panama. When you get this, be sure to get voice service activated as well as data, to make sure your emergency call will go through. If you don’t have a Panama number, many hospitals and clinics have their own direct emergency lines. For example, the Johns Hopkins affiliated hospital in Panama City, Pacifica Salud, has its own emergency number, which is country code 507-204-8184. Make sure and put these emergency numbers in your cell phone BEFORE you arrive in Panama…or as soon you get here.

#2 - Public vs. Private Hospitals
Panama offers both public and private healthcare options. Public hospitals are incredibly affordable but can have longer wait times. Private hospitals, on the other hand, offer world-class care with shorter wait times and English-speaking staff. Knowing which hospital is best for emergencies can make all the difference. Spend a few minutes to find the best public or private hospital near where you’ll be staying and plug in the hospital’s name, location and emergency phone number into your phone. This way, you’ll have it handy in case of emergency. For a list of hospitals in Panama’s main expat areas, go to ChoosePanama.com/emergency.

#3 - Cost of Emergency Care
One of the biggest perks of living in Panama is the cost of medical care. Emergency visits to public hospitals can be as low as $10 to $20. Private hospitals charge more but they are still at a fraction of what you'd pay in the U.S. Many expats who live in Panama or visit regularly choose to carry Panama health insurance to cover unexpected costs. If you have health insurance from another country, contact your hospital of choice to make sure your insurance will be honored in case of emergency. For more information about insurance, watch this interview next.

#4 - Ambulance Services
In an emergency, you can call an ambulance through 911, but depending on where you are, private ambulance services may provide a faster response time. Some hospitals have their own ambulance fleets. There are also private ambulance services, like SEMM, that provide memberships for regular healthcare access.

#5 Evacuation Services
In the event of a serious medical emergency, evacuation services can be a lifesaver—literally. Whether you need to be transported to a higher-level facility within Panama or even flown to the U.S. for specialized care, having access to an evacuation service ensures you receive the treatment you need, when you need it. Some companies, like MASA, offer memberships that cover emergency airlifts and ground transportation. Others, are pay as you go. Either way, knowing your options ahead of time will give you peace of mind in critical situations.

After living in Panama a dozen years, I only know one person who has used evacuation services. My client was in the US and his son was in Panama with kidney failure during Covid. My client spent 33 thousand dollars for a direct flight with Horizon Air Ambulance from Panama City to Chicago. It included 2 certified nurses and a slew of medical equipment.

When he booked this, there were less expensive options. For example, if he had agreed to 1 stop instead of a direct flight, then it would have been eight thousand dollars cheaper. If he had flown to Houston or Miami, it would have been as low as $15,000. And if he hadn’t needed a medical ambulance, just a regular emergency transport, it would have been significantly cheaper.

So if there is ever a time when you need emergency evacuation, know that there are multiple services and price points available. Again, you can find out more on our website at ChoosePanama.com/emergency.

#6 - Pharmacy Accessibility
Panama has a pharmacy on nearly every corner, especially in Panama City, many of which are open 24/7. Pharmacists are highly knowledgeable and can provide medications without a prescription for minor issues. In a crisis, knowing the closest pharmacy can be a lifesaver. Some of the bigger pharmacy chains include Arrocha, El Javillo, Metro Plus, and Farma Value. In addition to this, the larger supermarket chains—such as Riba Smith and Super 99—have pharmacies inside the grocery store. If you need something basic, you can get it just about anywhere. If you need a more specialized medicine, try the larger pharmacies first.

#7 - Specialist Availability
Panama is home to highly skilled medical professionals, many trained internationally. If you need a specialist in an emergency, then private hospitals in Panama City are your best bet. They have specialists on-call 24/7 for everything from cardiology to orthopedics. About a year ago, one of my clients called me and said his wife was having a medical emergency. They were Chinese and spoke very little English… and absolutely no Spanish. We helped them get emergency transportation to the Pacifica Salud hospital. We also called ahead to the hospital to make sure she would be admitted immediately … and they would have a cardiologist ready to go. When she arrived  the hospital, the cardiologist saw her immediately… and ended up saving her life.

#8 - Language Barrier
While many doctors in private hospitals speak English, that’s not always the case in public hospitals. Learning a few key Spanish medical phrases or having a translation app ready can make your emergency experience smoother and less stressful. My favorite language app is Google Translate… which has gotten so much better in the last few years. Other options include SayHi and DeepL. For medical translation, DeepL is supposed to be one of the most accurate. If you have a pre-existing condition, experiment with a few different apps to see which one works best for you.

#9 Telemedicine Services
In the past few years, telemedicine has become increasingly popular in Panama. Many private hospitals and clinics now offer virtual consultations, allowing you to speak with a doctor without leaving your home. This is especially useful for non-urgent medical needs or getting quick advice during an emergency. Again, it’s best to have this information in your phone before traveling to Panama, so take a few minutes to investigate before your trip starts.

#10 - Overall Quality of Emergency Care
Overall, I have been thrilled with the quality of emergency care in Panama. With modern hospitals, well-trained professionals, and a healthcare system that balances affordability with quality, Panama provides excellent care when you need it most. Whether you’re in the city or a rural area, you can rest easy knowing help is available when you need it most.

CLOSING:
That wraps up our list of the top 10 things you need to know about emergency care in Panama. If you’re considering a move or just want to be prepared for your next trip, having this information can make all the difference. Is Panama's Tap Water REALLY Safe to Drink?

2/1/2025

Did you know that Panama is one of the few countries in Latin America where you can drink fresh, pure water straight from the tap? That’s right—no bottled water needed, no boiling required. Whether you’re visiting or planning to move here, this is a huge perk that sets Panama apart. Today, we’re diving into why Panama’s water is so safe, how it compares to other countries, and we’ll even put it to the test using a diagnostic strip to see if it lives up to the hype.

Panama’s Water System
Panama’s unique geography and infrastructure play a big role in its clean water supply. The country is blessed with abundant rainfall and natural water sources, which are carefully managed through modern treatment facilities. In Panama City and other major areas like Boquete, tap water is filtered and treated to meet high safety standards. This means you can fill up your glass straight from the tap without a second thought. However, in some rural areas, bottled water is still recommended as a precaution. Knowing where you are …and the quality of local infrastructure is key.

Water Quality Testing
Now, let’s get into the fun part—testing the water! I’m using a standard reagent strip to analyze 16 key markers of water quality. You can follow along as I get the water out of the faucet, and then dip the test strip into the water. The instructions told me to wait about 60 seconds after the dip to look at the results.

While the test strip is developing, let’s talk about what this reagent strip will test. The 16 markers tested cover three main categories: safety, taste, and overall quality.

  • Safety indicators include lead, copper, nitrate, nitrite, and chlorine. These tell us if the water is free from harmful contaminants.
  • Taste and appearance factors include hardness, pH, fluoride, and alkalinity, which affect how the water feels and tastes.
  • Finally, we’ll check overall quality markers like sodium chloride, sulfate, total chlorine, and carbonate levels.

As you can see, we’re using a science-based approach to confirm what we’ve always heard about Panama’s water.

Results of the TEST
After running the test, here’s the verdict:  the safety markers came back in the optimal range. No lead, no heavy metals, no excess chlorine. The pH level is just right, making the water taste crisp and refreshing. The only thing that is a little high is the sodium chloride, which is salt, and that’s due to the fact that my building uses sodium chloride in its water processing system. So as you can see, the tap water here isn’t just safe—it’s exceptional. You can confidently drink it, cook with it, and even brag a little about how eco-friendly you’re being by skipping bottled water.

Benefits of Panama’s Drinking Water
Speaking of eco-friendliness, let’s talk about the benefits of drinking tap water in Panama. First, it’s incredibly convenient. No need to lug heavy bottles of water from the store or worry about running out. Second, it’s cost-effective. Tap water is essentially free, saving you money that you can spend on more exciting things—like exploring Panama. And finally, it’s great for the environment. By drinking tap water, you’re cutting down on plastic waste, which is a win for everyone.

Of course, there are exceptions to keep in mind. If you’re traveling to remote areas, it’s always a good idea to double-check with locals about the water quality. Bottled water might be a safer option in places where treatment facilities aren’t as advanced. But for the most part, Panama’s water system is reliable and consistent.

Closing
There you have it—Panama’s water is not only safe but also a standout benefit compared to other countries in the region.
