Myths About Living in Panama: What You Need to Know

3/29/2025

You’ve seen the YouTube videos. You’ve read the blogs. And maybe you’ve even chatted with that one friend who won’t stop talking about their amazing life in Panama.

But what’s real… and what’s just expat fantasy?

Stay tuned, because today we’re diving into the tropical truth behind what it’s really like to live in Panama… and busting some of the biggest myths out there.

#1: Panama Is Just for Retirees
This myth is yesterday’s news.

Panama is a retirement haven, yes—but it’s also buzzing with young professionals, digital nomads, and entrepreneurs. Whether you're in your 30s building a business or in your 70s living your best life, Panama offers modern infrastructure, coworking spaces, and a vibrant community.

Fun Fact: Panama now has a thriving remote work scene in both Panama City and the Coronado Beaches area. In fact, most of the new projects are now including co-working spaces to make your life in Panama that much easier.

#2: Healthcare in Panama is Mediocre
This myth needs a second opinion.

Panama offers high-quality, affordable private healthcare. Many facilities are affiliated with U.S. institutions like Johns Hopkins, and most doctors speak excellent English.

Here’s a Fact You Need to Know: A specialist visit in Panama typically costs between $40 to $60 with little to no wait time. Healthcare is truly one of the most shockingly SPECTACULAR things about Panama.

#3: Panama Uses the U.S. Dollar
This is true.

Panama’s official currency is the Panamanian Balboa. However, it’s permanently pegged to the U.S. dollar. This makes the US Dollar the de facto currency of Panama. For Americans, as well as many other international expats, banking, investing, and day-to-day purchases are simple and familiar.

#4: Moving Abroad Is Too Complicated
This is a myth… and it’s time to demolish this outdated belief.

Panama is one of the most accessible countries for expats. With immigration programs like the Friendly Nations Visa and the Pensionado Visa, a streamlined legal process, and bilingual attorneys, relocating to Panama is easier than you might think.

In fact, with the help of a good attorney, most expats can get residency in just a few months.

#5: Panama Has Third-World Infrastructure
This myth is as outdated as a rotary-dial telephone.

Panama has modern roads, reliable electricity, high-speed internet, and clean drinking water in most areas. And if you want urban living, Panama City has a fully functional 2-line metro system, with a 14-station third line that is slated to be completed by 2026.

Fun Fact: Internet speeds in Panama City rival those of major U.S. cities, making it perfect for remote work … and streaming the latest videos of Yours Truly.

#6: You Have to Know Everything Before You Move
This is a myth…You don’t need a plan, just a plane ticket
You don’t need to have it all figured out. Panama is a learn-as-you-go experience. From immigration and banking to grocery shopping and cultural differences, you’ll learn by doing.
Every expat has a “first time I messed up” story. It’s part of the adventure.

#7: You Can’t Own Property as a Foreigner
This is myth.

Panama allows 100 percent property ownership by foreigners, with the same legal rights as Panamanian citizens. Whether it’s a beachfront condo or a mountain villa, your investment is protected by law. The only restriction is that foreigners aren’t allowed to own land located with 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles) of an international border for national security reasons.

Bonus: Property taxes are incredibly low, and some properties even qualify for tax exemptions. For example, in my building, we won’t pay property taxes until 2032.

Myth #8: You’ll Lose Access to Modern Conveniences
This is a myth.

Panama offers everything you need—from Uber and high-speed internet to international supermarkets and food delivery apps. You won’t be roughing it unless you choose to. You can still get gluten-free flour, Louis Vuitton handbags, and specialty hair products.

Myth #9: The Rainy Season Will Ruin Your Life
This myth is all wet.

Panama’s rainy season starts in May and ends in November. When you look at the online, the weather forecasts can be deceiving because you’ll see rain forecasted almost every day during rainy season. You might think to yourself, “I don’t want to go to Panama and have it rain all day, every day!”

But here’s what the weather apps don’t tell you. Most days it rains for just a few minutes to an hour in the afternoon, and then it’s back to sunshine.

So don’t let the weather apps fool you from missing out on the best time in Panama.

Myth #10: It’s Hard to Get to Panama
This myth should check the flight schedule

Panama is one of the best-connected countries in the region. Tocumen International Airport offers direct flights to major cities across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Latin America.

It’s called the “Hub of the Americas” for a reason.

Fact #11: Panama Is Politically and Economically Stable
This is true.

Panama is known for its long-standing political stability and strong service-based economy. The U.S. dollar, the Panama Canal, and a robust banking system all contribute to a solid financial foundation.

The Panama Canal alone contributes over $4 billion to the economy every year.

WRAP-UP
So, what’s the truth about Panama? As you can see, it’s not all hammocks and coconuts—but it is pretty amazing.

If you're looking for a country with modern conveniences, global access, affordable living, and vibrant culture, Panama might just be your dream destination.

If you enjoyed this episode, hit the like button, subscribe, and ring the bell so you never miss out on the real side of expat life in Panama.

Tell me in the comments—which myth surprised you the most, and which fact makes you want to pack your bags?

Until next time,
See you in Panama!

Is Coronado the BEST Destination for Expats in 2025

3/22/2025

Imagine waking up to the gentle crash of waves, the salty ocean breeze drifting through your window, and the warmth of the golden sun rising over the ocean. When you step outside, you feel the soft sand under your feet, and you breathe in the fragrant tropical air. Your feel one with  nature as you sip your morning coffee, freshly roasted from Panama’s highlands.

This sounds like an AI dream, right? Well hold on to your beach umbrella because this could be your reality, sooner than you think.

Welcome to Coronado, the vibrant heart of the Panama Beaches region. But what makes this coastal paradise so special? In this episode, we’re diving into Coronado’s rich history, its unique attractions, and the incredible lifestyle that keeps people coming back for more.

The Founding of Coronado
It’s 1941. Panamanian entrepreneur Roberto Eisenmann had a dream—a place where city dwellers could escape the chaos and recharge by the sea. He didn’t just want a few beach houses; he envisioned one of the first planned coastal communities in Panama. Over time, his vision grew into the thriving beach town we know today.

Coronado has become a dynamic destination, offering a range of homes from luxurious villas to cozy condos. What was once a weekend retreat has evolved into a year-round haven for those seeking both tranquility and community.

What Makes Coronado Special
The group of towns that make up the Coronado Beaches Region is often called the Panama Riviera… and for good reason. Let’s break down the magic formula that makes this place special:

  1. Modern Amenities: Imagine not having to drive hours for basic needs. The Coronado area offers everything from supermarkets and international schools… to healthcare clinics and golf courses.
  2. Location, Location, Location: Coronado is less than 2 hours from Panama City. That’s close enough for a quick trip to the capital but far enough to feel like you’re in your own tropical oasis.
  3. Unique Beaches: Here, you’ll find stretches of both white sand beaches as well as swirling tan and volcanic black sand beaches.

Speaking of which, let me share a quick story. Years ago, I broke my ankle in three places while rollerblading with my dog (bad life choice, I know). Decades later, I still felt constant pain—until I walked on the volcanic sand while on vacation in Coronado. In just a few days, the pain was …gone. Having lived with chronic pain for so long, it was nothing short of miraculous.

I’m not the only one who has experienced this phenomenon. Other expats have shared similar stories about the volcanic sand’s incredible health benefits. Maybe it’s due to the sand’s warmth and high mineral content. Or maybe it’s due to the good weather in Panama. [shrug] I can’t tell you exactly why my pain is gone, but I am so thankful it is.

The Center of the Panama Beaches Region
Coronado isn’t just a destination—it’s the central hub of the Panama Beaches region. This stretch of coastline runs from Punta Chame to Buenaventura, covering 50 miles—or eighty kilometers—of the Pacific Coast shore.

Here are a few highlights nearby:

  • Punta Chame: A paradise for kite surfers, with expansive beaches and steady winds.
  • Gorgona: A peaceful, residential town perfect for those seeking a quieter life.
  • San Carlos: A favorite for surfers and nature lovers.
  • Buenaventura: The epitome of luxury, with an upscale resort and world-class amenities.

Coronado’s central location makes it the ideal home base for exploring these neighboring gems.

Why Expats Are Drawn to Coronado
Coronado has become a magnet for expats, but why do they choose to settle here?

  1. Year-Round Sunshine: You can count on warm weather with just the occasional rainy afternoon during the wet season.
  2. A Welcoming Community: Making friends is easy here, thanks to social clubs, expat meetups, and a strong sense of togetherness.
  3. Affordable Luxury: While Coronado offers high-end properties, the cost of living—for housing, carrying costs, and day-to-day expenses—remains surprisingly reasonable.
  4. Top-Notch Healthcare: You don’t have to go far for excellent medical care. Three major clinics serve the Coronado area:

  • Clínica San Fernando Coronado is an extension of Panama City’s renowned Hospital San Fernando.
  • Clínica Hospital Panamericano is located in Bayside Center and offers general and specialized services.
  • Costa Pacífico Medical Center is Situated in The Village shopping center and provides general medical services and lab work.

Coronado truly offers peace of mind with its combination of comfort and convenience.

Lifestyle and Activities
Coronado is more than just a pretty beach—it’s a place where adventure and relaxation coexist. Her are some of the activities you could enjoy.

  • Golf: The Coronado golf course is one of the region’s best, with ocean views and perfectly manicured greens.
  • Beaches: Whether you want to swim, surf, or simply unwind on the sand, the options are endless.
  • Outdoor Adventures: From hiking trails to waterfalls in the nearby mountains, nature lovers have plenty to explore.
  • Dining and Shopping: Craving fresh seafood or international flavors? Coronado has restaurants for every palate, plus boutiques, supermarkets, and specialty stores for all your needs.

Real Estate and Investment Opportunities
Coronado’s real estate market has something for everyone—whether you’re looking for a beachfront condo, a gated community, or a luxury estate. With property values still competitive and demand for vacation rentals on the rise, investing here isn’t just a lifestyle upgrade—it’s a smart financial move.

In the Coronado Beaches region, your dream home is within reach. Want absolute beachfront for under $200K? You got it. Prefer a waterfront villa with a yacht at your doorstep? That’s here too. In fact, you can live next to an equestrian center, or in the heart of a golf course, or by a marina, or surrounded by untouched nature. Whatever your vision of paradise looks like, you can find it here.

The Future of Coronado
Despite its growth in tourism, infrastructure, and real estate, Coronado has maintained its laid-back, small-town charm. As more people discover Panama’s potential, Coronado is poised to stay at the forefront of the country’s development, continuing to offer a balance of modern convenience and tropical paradise.

Closing
So, there you have it—the Coronado Beaches Region of Panama, where you can enjoy the best of both worlds: relaxation and convenience in a stunning coastal setting. If you’ve been dreaming of a beachside lifestyle with modern amenities, this might just be your perfect match.

Unveiling 13 of Panama's Most Intriguing Secrets

3/14/2025

Think you know Panama? Think again! Sure, you’ve heard about the famous canal, stunning beaches, and tax perks, but there’s so much more to this country. From a river that flows in two directions to a failed Scottish colony that changed world history, these 13 surprising facts will make you see Panama in a whole new way—and maybe even rethink where you want to live, invest, or explore!

1. Panama is the Only Place in the World Where You Can See the Sunrise on the Pacific and the Sunset on the Atlantic
That’s right! Due to Panama’s unique geography, you can literally watch the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean and catch the sunset over the Atlantic—all in the same day. Hike up Volcán Barú, the country’s highest point, for a rare view of both oceans at once!

2. It’s the Only Country Where You Can Swim in Two Oceans in One Day
Panama is so narrow that you can drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea in just over an hour! Adventurous travelers can surf in the Pacific in the morning and snorkel in the Caribbean by afternoon.

3. The Panama Canal Generates More Revenue Than You Think
The Panama Canal isn’t just an engineering marvel—it’s an economic powerhouse. It generates over $4 billion annually for Panama, making it one of the most profitable waterways in the world. And get this: A single large container ship can pay over $500,000 just to pass through!

4. Panama is Home to the Largest Mall in Latin America
Shopping lovers, take note! Albrook Mall in Panama City is the largest shopping mall… in ALL Latin America. It has over 700 stores, a multiple food courts, a bowling alley, a movie theater, and even a hotel attached to it. Covering 4.1 million square feet, this retail giant is bigger than Canada’s West Edmonton Mall …and just slightly smaller than the Mall of America in the U.S. If you love shopping, you could easily spend an entire day (or two!) exploring it all. Be sure to pack some comfortable shoes.

5. Panama Has More Bird Species Than the U.S. and Canada Combined
Nature lovers, take note: Panama is a bird-watching paradise with over 1,000 species of birds—more than the U.S. and Canada combined! From the resplendent Quetzal to the elusive Harpy Eagle (Panama’s national bird), it’s a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. Even when I just pop over to my local grocery store, the sound like a symphony of birdsong.

6. There’s a Secret Caribbean Island Full of Giant Starfish
Ever dreamed of swimming with hundreds of giant starfish? In Bocas del Toro, there’s a place called Starfish Beach, where the shallow, crystal-clear waters are filled with massive bright orange starfish resting on the ocean floor. Just don’t pick them up—it's illegal!

7. The World’s Second Largest Duty-Free Zone is in Panama
Panama is home to Colón Free Trade Zone, the second-largest duty-free shopping zone in the world (after Hong Kong). This economic hub moves billions of dollars in goods every year and attracts thousands of international buyers looking for tax-free deals.

8. Panama Has the Oldest Operating Railroad in Central America
The Panama Railroad was completed in 1855, making it the first transcontinental railroad in the world. Built before the Panama Canal, it played a huge role in the California Gold Rush, helping transport gold-seekers across the isthmus on their way to the West Coast. Today, you can take a scenic train ride from the Pacific to the Caribbean in just one hour!

9. Panama Has a River That Flows in Two Directions
The Chagres River is one of the few rivers in the world that flows toward both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, AT THE SAME TIME. Naturally, it flows north into the Caribbean Sea, but when the Panama Canal was built, its waters were dammed to create Gatun Lake, which now feeds the canal’s locks. This system redirects part of the river southward toward the Pacific, making it a vital force in global trade. The Chagres River is a one-of-a-kind phenomenon, behaving like almost no other river in the world!

10. Scotland Once Tried (and Failed) to Colonize Panama’s Darien Region
Before the British and Spanish fought for control of Panama, Scotland made a disastrous attempt to colonize the Darien Gap in 1698. Known as the Darien Scheme, the Scots invested 20% of their national wealth into establishing a trade colony there. But due to disease, starvation, and Spanish resistance, the colony collapsed, bankrupting Scotland and forcing it into a union with England—leading to the formation of Great Britain. In other words, Scotland’s failure in Panama changed world history!

11. Panama’s National Beer Was Once the Most Consumed in Latin America
Love a cold beer? You’re not alone! Panama’s Balboa and Atlas beers were once the most widely consumed brews in Latin America. Today, the country has a booming craft beer scene, with local breweries producing everything from tropical lagers to hoppy IPAs.

12. The Oldest Continuously Operating Hotel in Latin America is in Panama
The Central Hotel in Casco Viejo, built in 1874, holds the title as the oldest operating hotel in Latin America. Once a hotspot for U.S. Canal workers and foreign dignitaries, today it’s a luxury boutique hotel blending colonial elegance with modern comfort.

13. Panama is Home to a Hidden Tropical Fjord
Norway isn’t the only place with fjords! Panama’s Gulf of Chiriquí features Boca Chica, a stunning hidden fjord with towering cliffs, lush mangroves, and secluded beaches. This area is one of the best-kept secrets for whale watching, fishing, and eco-tourism.

So, which of these blew your mind? Let me know in the comments! And if you’re thinking about visiting or moving to Panama, make sure to like and subscribe our YouTube channel for more insider tips!

Have you ever dreamed about living in a tropical paradise—somewhere with warm weather, breathtaking views, and a laid-back lifestyle? Maybe you’re just starting to dream about moving abroad, or maybe you’ve already decided that Panama is the place for you. Either way, the biggest question you’ll face is: Where should you live?

Do you want to wake up in a luxury high-rise with sweeping ocean views? Maybe you’d rather step outside and feel the sand between your toes every morning. Or perhaps you’re looking for fresh mountain air and a close-knit expat community.

In this episode, we’re breaking down five of the best places to live or retire in Panama—from vibrant cityscapes to tranquil beachfront retreats to lush highland hideaways. And we’re not just talking about pretty scenery. We’ll cover real estate prices, community vibes, and the unique perks of each location so you can decide which spot feels like home.

Costa del Este and Santa Maria – The Beverly Hills of Panama City
If you love modern luxury, convenience, and a polished urban lifestyle, Costa del Este and the golf community of Santa Maria might be your dream location. This is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in all of Panama, and it feels like a city within a city.

Why You’ll Love It:
  • The high-rises here are sleek and modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the Pacific Ocean.
  • The streets are wide, clean, and lined with palm trees, perfect for morning walks or biking.
  • Everything you need is within minutes of home—restaurants, shopping malls, grocery stores, and top-rated private hospitals.
  • There’s a big expat community here, especially professionals and business owners, so you’ll have plenty of networking opportunities.
  • And for frequent travelers, the airport is just 15 minutes away.

Real Estate Prices:
  • You can get a one-bedroom luxury apartment that’s LOADED with amenities for around $250,000.
  • A larger three-bedroom in a high-end building with water views will run you $500,000 to $900,000, depending on views and amenities.
  • If you want a penthouse-style, ultra-luxury apartment, prices start around one and a half million dollars.
  • If you want a home on the Santa Maria golf course, prices range from about one to eight million dollars, depending on size, location, and subdivision.

Costa del Este and its neighbor Santa Maria is all about convenience, luxury, and a high-end lifestyle. If that’s your vibe, you’ll love it here.

Avenida Balboa – Oceanfront City Living
Avenida Balboa is Panama City’s iconic oceanfront boulevard. If you love a vibrant city atmosphere but want to wake up to ocean views every day, this is the place.
Why You’ll Love It:
  • The Cinta Costera, a stunning waterfront park, is right outside your door—perfect for biking, jogging, or just taking in the ocean breeze.
  • You can walk everywhere—grocery stores, cafés, banks, shopping malls, even some of the best restaurants in the country.
  • The nightlife is buzzing, with rooftop bars, music venues, and fine dining just a short walk away.
  • This is one of the best areas for easy access to hospitals and top-tier medical care.
  • Plus, real estate here is more affordable than Costa del Este, so you get a prime location at a lower price.
Real Estate Prices:
  • A modern one-bedroom apartment with ocean views starts around $180,000 to $350,000.
  • A spacious two or three-bedroom with luxury finishes can range from $300,000 to $650,000.
  • A penthouse with insane panoramic views? You’re looking at $1 million and up.
If you want to be in the heart of the action with the ocean as your backdrop, Avenida Balboa is for you.

Playa Bonita – A Beachfront Retreat Just Outside the City
What if you could have the beach life and city convenience—at the same time? Playa Bonita, located just 15 minutes outside of Panama City, lets you live in a beachfront resort-style community while keeping access to everything the city offers.

Why You’ll Love It:
  • This is the only true beachfront community close to the city.
  • It’s a gated, private, and exclusive area, so you get peace and quiet without being far from civilization.
