Does Panama Get Hurricanes?

10/18/2024

With hurricanes making headlines, you might be wondering if there’s a safe haven from these devastating storms. Well, guess what? Panama just might be your answer! In today’s episode, I’m revealing 9 surprising reasons why Panama stays completely safe from hurricanes—while the rest of the region braces for impact. If you’re looking for a paradise that keeps you out of harm’s way, you won’t want to miss this. Let’s dive in and uncover why Panama remains untouched by hurricanes!

#9 –Geographical Location
Panama’s location is one of the biggest factors in its hurricane safety. It sits just south of the hurricane belt, which means it's out of the path where most Atlantic and Pacific hurricanes form. The majority of hurricanes originate much further north, so Panama is naturally protected from direct hits. It’s all about being in the right spot!

#8 –Proximity to the Equator
Panama’s proximity to the equator is another huge advantage. Hurricanes need something called the Coriolis effect to get their rotation going, and this effect is extremely weak near the equator. Because Panama is located only about 9 degrees north of the equator, it’s too close for hurricanes to fully develop and gain strength. In fact, hurricanes never cross the equator. Why? The Coriolis effect reverses at the equator. Think of how a ceiling fan slows down and then stops before it reverses direction. This same principle applies to hurricanes, meaning that storms can’t maintain their rotation as they cross into the southern hemisphere. This makes Panama’s location even more of a natural defense against hurricanes.

#7 – The Pacific Ocean
While Panama has coastlines on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the Pacific side is key to hurricane safety. Hurricanes need warm ocean water—at least 80°F or about 27 degrees Celsius—to fuel their intensity. The Pacific waters along Panama’s coast are cooler, which makes it harder for hurricanes to gather strength on that side. So, even if a tropical storm forms, it’s not likely to become a full-blown hurricane.

#6 – Wind Shear
Panama experiences a phenomenon known as wind shear, which is basically a rapid change in wind speed or direction with height. High levels of wind shear can tear hurricanes apart before they have a chance to build. So, even if tropical storms try to make their way toward Panama, the wind shear helps weaken them …or disrupt their formation altogether.

#5 – Mountain Ranges
Panama’s terrain plays a major role in its hurricane safety. The country is home to several mountain ranges, including the Central Cordillera [kor-dee-YAIR-uh]. These mountain ranges act as a natural shield, blocking storm systems and preventing them from moving inland. If a storm does approach from either coast, these mountains help break it up before it can cause significant damage.

#4 – Low-Pressure Systems
Panama tends to have stable, low-pressure systems that are unfavorable for hurricane formation. Hurricanes thrive in areas of high-pressure systems that allow them to grow in size and strength. But Panama’s consistent low-pressure zones help keep the atmosphere calm and make it difficult for any major storm systems to develop or intensify.

#3 – Surrounding Landmasses
Panama is bordered by larger landmasses to the north, including Central America and the Caribbean islands, which often bear the brunt of tropical storms and hurricanes. These areas take the hit, and by the time any storms might head south toward Panama, they’ve usually lost strength. Essentially, Panama’s neighbors act as buffers against the worst of the storm activity.

#2 – The Caribbean Current
Another reason Panama is less prone to hurricanes is the Caribbean current. This current flows westward from the Atlantic and helps steer storms away from Panama, pushing them toward the northern parts of Central America or into the open ocean. The current essentially acts like a conveyor belt, guiding storms away from Panama’s coastlines.

#1 – Historical Hurricane Data
Finally, the numbers speak for themselves. Historically, Panama has never experienced a direct hit from a hurricane. In fact, it’s one of the few countries in the Americas that can make this claim. While tropical storms occasionally pass by, they don’t reach the destructive levels of hurricanes. This long-standing track record makes Panama one of the safest places in the region when it comes to extreme weather.

Conclusion
And there you have it—9 solid reasons why Panama is so safe from hurricanes! Whether it’s the geographical location, the natural terrain, or even the historical data, Panama stands out as a hurricane-free zone, which is yet another reason that it’s a fantastic place to live or invest.

Discover PANAMA'S Hidden Cultural Secrets and Etiquette Tips

10/16/2024

Are you thinking about visiting Panama? Before you pack your bags, you’ll want to know the cultural norms and etiquette that can make or break your experience in this tropical paradise. In this countdown, we’re diving into the top 10 must-know tips to help you fit in… and avoid any cultural faux pas. Stick around because what you don’t know could surprise you.

Number 10 - Greeting Etiquette
Let’s kick things off with greetings. In Panama, a simple handshake is common, but when you’re among friends, expect a warm embrace or a light kiss on the cheek. Remember, it’s all about making a genuine connection. When you’re introduced to someone, a smile and eye contact go a long way in showing respect and friendliness.

Number 9 - Personal Space
Panamanians tend to stand closer during conversations than you might be used to. While Americans typically maintain about 18 to 24 inches of personal space when talking to a non-family member, Latin Americans often stand closer, averaging about 12 inches apart. This closer proximity reflects a cultural emphasis on warmth and personal connection. It’s a sign of trust and warmth, and stepping back might be perceived as distancing or even unfriendly behavior. So, don’t back away—embrace this closer contact in your personal space.

Number 8 - Punctuality
While being on time is appreciated, being punctual isn’t a hard and fast rule in Panama. For social events, showing up 15 to 30 minutes late is perfectly normal. But don’t get too comfortable with this in business settings—being punctual is still important for making a good impression.

Number 7 - Dining Etiquette
If you’re invited to someone’s home for a meal, it’s customary to bring a small gift—like flowers, chocolates, or a bottle of wine—as a token of appreciation. Arriving on time is appreciated … but showing up a few minutes late is generally acceptable in social settings. Unlike in some cultures where finishing everything on your plate is polite, in Panama, leaving a small amount of food on your plate indicates that you’re satisfied and well-fed. Also, be prepared for some lively conversation; Panamanians enjoy engaging and friendly discussions during meals, and it’s a great way to build relationships.

Number 6 - Dress Code
When in Panama, it’s important to dress the part. Panama is warm and tropical, but locals still dress smartly, especially in Panama City. Casual doesn’t mean sloppy—opt for lightweight, neat clothing, and avoid wearing flip-flops or beachwear unless you’re ACTUALLY on the beach. If you’re going to a bank or to a nice restaurant for dinner, men need to wear long pants and close-toed shoes. If they don’t, they could be denied entry. Women tend to dress up, especially in Panama City. If you have a glitzy dress you’ve been saving for a special occasion, make sure to bring it with you. Panama fashion is as hot as it’s salsa music.

Number 5 - Gift-Giving
Panamanians appreciate thoughtful gifts, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Avoid giving sharp objects like knives or scissors, which can symbolize severing a relationship. And when you receive a gift, open it right away to show your appreciation. It’s best to avoid overly expensive gifts, as they can make the recipient feel uncomfortable or obligated. If you’re giving flowers, avoid black or purple flowers as these colors are typically associated with funerals. Instead, choose bright, cheerful flowers that reflect the lively and warm spirit of Panamanian culture.

Number 4 - Social Taboos
At number 4, let’s talk about what NOT to do. It’s considered rude to point with your fingers—use your whole hand instead. And avoid making negative comments about Panama, as locals are very proud of their country. Respect goes a long way here!

Number 3 - Tipping
In Panama, tipping isn’t mandatory, but it’s appreciated. A standard tip at restaurants and other service industries is 10%, and if you receive exceptional service, feel free to tip more. Just remember, tipping in cash is always better than adding it to your credit card, as many restaurants and hotels participate in tip sharing. With tip sharing, if you leave a $100 tip on your credit card for an exceptional server … he’ll only get a small portion of it.

Although you may not come from a culture of tipping, it’s customary to tip 10% to restaurant wait staff, the person who does your hair or nails at a salon, and your masseuse. When it comes to the valet who parks your car or the concierge at your hotel, usually a dollar or two is sufficient, but if they are spectacular, it’s okay to tip more. Finally, it’s customary to tip your bag boy at the grocery store. They don’t make anything other than tips, so feel free to be generous.

Number 2 - Family Values
In Panama, the importance of family cannot be overstated. Family is at the heart of Panamanian culture, and you’ll see this in everything from weekend gatherings to big celebrations. If you’re invited to a family event, it’s a BIG deal—so show up, be present, and enjoy the warmth and hospitality."

Number 1 - The Panamanian 'Tranquilo' Attitude
Panama is known for its laid-back, relaxed vibe. Whether it’s dealing with a delay or navigating the traffic, staying calm and going with the flow is key. Leave your Type-A personality at the border, and embrace the “tranquilo” way of life—it’ll make your time in Panama much more enjoyable."

In Closing:
That wraps up our countdown of the top 10 cultural norms and etiquette tips for Panama! Now you’re ready to blend in and make the most of your time here. Thanks for watching, and remember to subscribe for more tips on living your dream life in Panama.

See you in Panama.

Panama vs Costa Rica: Which Is Better for Retirement

10/15/2024

Retirement in paradise... it's a dream many of us share, but the big question is: where’s the better spot to make it a reality—Panama or Costa Rica? If you’ve been daydreaming about white sandy beaches, lush rainforests, and a low cost of living, then this countdown is for you.

Today, we’re comparing these two Central American gems to help you decide which is the better option for your golden years. Trust me, as someone who’s been living in Panama for years, I’ve got some insider info that might just surprise you. We’re going to cover everything from the cost of living to healthcare, real estate, and even the food.

By the end of this episode, you’ll have a clear idea of which country is calling your name!
Ready? Let’s kick off our countdown.

#10 – Weather
Let’s start with the weather, because who doesn’t love some sunshine? Both Panama and Costa Rica offer beautiful tropical climates, with warm temperatures year-round. In both countries, you’ll experience rainy and dry seasons, and depending on where you live, you can find cooler mountain areas or coastal spots that are warm and breezy. Honestly, it’s hard to pick a winner here—they’re both paradise when it comes to weather. So, for this one, I’m calling it a tie so they each get a point.

#9 – Cost of Living
When it comes to stretching your retirement dollars, both countries are much more affordable than the US or Europe, but Panama’s use of the US Dollar, lower import taxation, its efficient supply chain edges out Costa Rica. The cost of groceries, transportation, and utilities is twenty to thirty percent lower in Panama, and I’ve found that my money just goes further here.

You can live a very comfortable life in Panama for less, especially if you take advantage of the famous Pensionado visa program that give you discounts on everything from healthcare to travel to movie tickets. I’ve met so many expats who say that Panama’s affordability has allowed them to enjoy their retirement more as they have a better quality of living without the financial stress. Score one for Panama.

#8 – Healthcare
Healthcare is a huge consideration for everyone… but it’s especially so for retirees. Costa Rica’s healthcare system is good, with both public and private options, but Panama’s private healthcare system is exceptional. Hospitals in Panama City are world-class, with doctors trained in the US, and you can get specialized care without waiting months. Plus, healthcare costs are much lower than what you’re probably used to. I’ve personally had excellent care here, from routine check-ups to more specialized treatment, and it’s both affordable and top-notch. Panama wins this one as well.

#7 – Strength of the Economy
The strength of the economy plays a big role in your quality of life. Costa Rica’s economy is stable, but Panama’s is stronger, largely thanks to the Panama Canal and its position as a global trade hub. Panama uses the US dollar, which makes financial transactions and planning easier for expats. With a more diversified economy, Panama feels like a safer bet for the long term.

#6 – Cost of Real Estate
Let’s get into real estate—one of the biggest decisions when retiring abroad. Panama offers a wider variety of affordable real estate options, especially when compared to Costa Rica. In places like Panama City or the beach towns, you can find luxury ocean-view condos for much less than what you’d pay in Costa Rica. For example, in late 2024, a 750 square foot beachfront apartment costs about $178,000 at Royal Palm in Nueva Gorgona, Panama. A similar property with similar amenities costs about $238,000 in Jaco Beach, Costa Rica. When doing apples-to-apples comparison, Panama wins this one hands-down.

#5 – Access to Goods and Services
Next up is access to goods and services. Both countries are modern and have good infrastructure, but Panama gives you access to a broader range of products, especially in Panama City. From imported goods to international brands, you’ll have no trouble finding what you need. The first time I walked into a grocery store in Panama, I found all my favorite US brands on the shelves. And when you’re at a mall in Panama City, you could be in Miami, Dallas or Tucson, Arizona…all  your favorite stores are here. Whether you’re shopping for furniture, tech gadgets, or even a quick Amazon delivery, Panama just makes it easier.

#4 – Ease of Travel to Major Cities
This one is for all of you globetrotters out there! If you love to travel or need to visit family back home, Panama’s Tocumen International Airport is a game changer. It’s one of the busiest hubs in Latin America, offering direct flights to cities all over the world. Costa Rica has good airports too, but Panama’s is a major international gateway. I love being able to hop on a plane with a direct flight to Miami, Medellin or even Madrid. It’s just so convenient. Score yet another one for Panama.

#3 – Food
Alright, foodies, this one’s for you. Both countries offer amazing food, with a mix of local flavors and international cuisine. But if you love seafood, fresh fruits, and a wide variety of dishes, Panama takes the lead. One reason is the population of Panama City is over 1.5 million people, while the population of San Jose, Costa Rica is just three hundred and forty thousand people. Honestly, the diversity of food in Panama City blew me away. If you want more information about the cuisine in Panama, [POINT UP] check out this video. Thanks to Panama’s proximity to both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, you’ll never run out of fresh fish… but even if you don’t like seafood, there are so many delicious options, from Italian to Peruvian, and everything in between. Panama wins this one as well.

#2 – Community
Building a sense of community is one of the most important aspects of retiring abroad. Both Panama and Costa Rica have strong, welcoming expat communities, making it easy for newcomers to feel at home. In Panama, the blend of locals and expats creates a dynamic environment where you can quickly integrate and make meaningful connections. Likewise, in Costa Rica, expats have built tight-knit communities where support and friendship are always nearby, and more locals in Costa Rica speak English. Whether you're in Panama or Costa Rica, you’ll find someone ready to share a cup of coffee or offer helpful tips when you’re getting settled. So, for this one, it's a tie, as they both offer a great sense of community.

#1 – Overall Retirement Experience
Finally, the overall retirement experience. Both Panama and Costa Rica are fantastic destinations, but Panama just offers more. Whether it’s affordability, Pensioner discounts, ease of access, world-class healthcare, or a booming economy, Panama consistently checks more boxes for retirees. I can personally say that moving to Panama has been one of the best decisions of my life, and I know so many expats who feel the same. Panama has everything you need to live your best retirement life.

In Conclusion
So there you have it, the ultimate showdown between Panama and Costa Rica! While both Panama and Costa Rica offer incredible opportunities for retirement, Panama edges out Costa Rica 10 to 2 in this countdown. That said, both countries are amazing options, each with their own unique charm, friendly communities, and beautiful landscapes. Ultimately, Panama offers a bit more when it comes to affordability, healthcare, and access to global services, making it a top choice for many retirees. But no matter where you choose, you're in for an incredible retirement experience. I know how much I’ve grown as a person having lived overseas, and I can only wish this amazing experience on you as well.

I hope this helped you get closer to making your retirement dreams a reality. If you have any questions or want to learn more about what life in Panama is really like, drop me a comment below or check out some of my other episodes.

10 Essential Things to Know About Panama's Healthcare Before You Move!

10/13/2024

Picture this: you’re living your best life in Panama, enjoying the sunshine and the beaches, and when you need to see a doctor, you get quality care without the sky-high costs. Sounds great, right? Whether you’re planning to retire, invest, or just live a simpler life, knowing what to expect with healthcare is key.

If you’ve been dreaming about moving to Panama, one of the big questions you might have is, ‘What is the healthcare system like?’ Today, we’re taking the plunge into Panama healthcare.

Get ready, because we’re counting down the top 10 things you need to know about Panama healthcare…from hospitals to health insurance, we’ve got it covered. So grab a cup of coffee, a tropical smoothie--or your favorite glass of wine—and let’s get into it!”

#10 – Affordability
I’m not sure if this should be #10 or #1… but let’s start with the good news. Panama’s healthcare system is shockingly more affordable than what you’re used to, especially if you’re coming from the United States. Imagine going to the doctor for less than $40, or even less than $15 at some places. Yes, you heard that right! Medical services are much cheaper here, and that includes everything from routine checkups to surgeries. In fact, I had to get an EKG recently and was stunned that it only cost $60. (WHISPER: I really thought they’d made a mistake.) In the US, it would have easily been hundreds of dollars… if not more. It’s a big relief to know you don’t have to break the bank just to stay healthy.

#9 - Public vs. Private Healthcare
Like most countries, Panama has both public and private healthcare systems. Public healthcare is very affordable—sometimes ridiculously cheap—but it can come with long wait times and crowded facilities. I personally prefer private healthcare. The private hospitals here are top-notch, with modern equipment and doctors who often speak English. And the best part is, even private healthcare is WAY more affordable than what you’d pay in North America. So, if you want to avoid the wait times and get immediate care, private hospitals and clinics are the way to go.

#8 - English-Speaking Doctors
Speaking of doctors, one of the things that surprised me the most is how many of them speak English. Now, if you’re fluent in Spanish, that’s great. But if you’re like me, and your Spanish is more ‘conversational,’ it’s a huge comfort to know that you won’t have a language barrier when talking to your doctor about medical terms you can barely pronounce in English. Many Panamanian doctors are trained in the US or Europe, so they’re not only fluent in English, but they also understand Western standards of care. When it comes to discussing your health, you’ll feel right at home.

#7 - Health Insurance Options
Let’s talk insurance, because no one wants to be caught off guard with a hefty medical bill. The good news is, health insurance in Panama is both affordable and flexible. You can get international health insurance that covers you both in Panama as well as in other countries … or you can go with a local insurance plan that only works in Panama. A lot of my friends use a local plan, and it costs just over a hundred dollars a month. And, get this—it covers almost everything-- From doctors’ visits to hospital stays and even most prescription medications. Compared to what we’re used to paying in the US, it’s a huge savings. #6 - Access to Specialists
Here’s something else that impressed me: if you need to see a specialist, you won’t have to jump through hoops like you would in the US or Canada. In Panama, you don’t need a referral to see a specialist. You can call them directly and make an appointment, often within just a few days. And the cost? Usually around $50 to $100 per visit. In my experience, I’ve seen dermatologists, orthopedic surgeons, and even a cardiologist without having to wait more than a few days for an appointment. It's refreshing, especially if you're used to the long wait times back home.

#5 - Quality of Care
You might be thinking, ‘This all sounds too good to be true. What about the quality of care?’ I get it. It’s a valid concern. But let me tell you, the quality of care in Panama compares to concierge level service in the US. I’ve been to several hospitals here—don’t worry, nothing too serious—and I’ve always been impressed with how clean and modern the facilities are. Plus, what sets Panamanian doctors apart is that they truly care. After an office visit, they typically follow-up the next day with a WhatsApp, making sure everything is okay.

#4 - Prescription Medications
Have you ever walked out of a US pharmacy feeling like you’ve just paid for gold? That’s not the case here. Prescription medications in Panama are much more affordable. Many of the same drugs that cost a small fortune in the US are available at a fraction of the price. And you know what’s even better? Some medications that require a prescription in the US can be bought over-the-counter here. You can buy antibiotics, allergy meds, and even cholesterol medication without needing a doctor’s visit.

#3 - Medical Tourism
Did you know that Panama is a hotspot for medical tourism? People from the US, Canada, and even Europe come here for affordable, high-quality medical treatments. Whether it's cosmetic surgery, dental work, stem-cell therapy, or even more complex surgeries, Panama has become a destination for those looking to save money without sacrificing care. The cost of medical procedures here is often a fraction of what it is in the US, and the care is top-tier. I’ve known people fly down for everything from dental implants to cosmetic surgery to knee replacements … and they’ve all been thrilled with the results.

#2 - Hospital Standards
If you’re worried about hospital standards, don’t be. Some of the private hospitals in Panama are affiliated with major US institutions, like Johns Hopkins, and meet international standards of care. In fact, hospitals like Punta Pacifica in Panama City have state-of-the-art facilities and technology. I’ve even sent photos to my doctor-friends in the US, who said the facilities rival the best of the best in the US. Whether you need routine care or something more serious, you can expect the same, if not better, level of care than you’d get in many Western countries.

#1 - Emergency Care
And finally, let’s talk about emergencies. No one likes to think about it, but if something goes wrong, you need to know that you can get the care you need quickly. In Panama, emergency rooms are well-equipped to handle a wide range of issues. You can go to a public or private hospital, depending on where you are. A few months ago, I had a client with a history of heart problems call me. She needed to go to the hospital, fast. We had her taken to Pacifica Salud, the Johns Hopkins affiliated hospital in Panama City. We’d called ahead so she was seen right away when she arrived. A few days later, her husband showered our team with boxes and boxes of chocolates. He said between our quick action and the immediate care his wife received at the hospital, we’d helped to save his wife’s life. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

In Conclusion:
So, there you have it—the top 10 things you need to know about healthcare in Panama. Whether you’re planning a short stay or looking to make Panama your forever home, it’s comforting to know that you can get excellent healthcare without the stress of sky-high costs.
