EXPAT LIFE HACKS You Never Knew You Needed

11/30/2024

If you’re thinking about moving abroad, you’ve probably considered all the exciting things—new cultures, landscapes, and experiences. But here’s something you might not have thought about: the importance of plugging into an expat community. Whether you’re in Panama or anywhere else, a supportive network of people who speak your language can make all the difference.

Today, I’m going to show you why being part of an expat community isn’t just a “nice-to-have” …it’s essential for your well-being and your overall success while living abroad.

Let’s dive into the top 7 reasons why you NEED community when you move to a new country!

#7: Humans Are Social Creatures—We Need Connection
First things first, it’s in our nature as humans to seek connection. Studies show that a lack of community can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. When you’re living abroad, especially in a place where the culture and language may be unfamiliar, that sense of isolation can creep in fast. Joining an expat community provides a sense of belonging and connection, helping you feel rooted in your new home. It’s not just about making friends; it’s about being part of something bigger than yourself, and that connection is vital for your mental and emotional health.

For me, it was harder to move from California—where I grew up—to Dallas, Texas, than it was for me to move from Dallas to Panama. When I first moved to Dallas in my twenties, I struggled for two years to find friends and to feel that sense of community that I longed for. For those two long years, I was miserable… and I couldn’t wait to leave Dallas. It was only after I finally felt part of the community that was I able to settle into my life there. Conversely, when I moved to Panama, I was able to immediately plug into the expat community. This made my transition easier, not to mention, happier.

#6: A Community Makes You Feel Safe and Supported
When you move to a new country, everything feels different. But when you’re surrounded by people who understand what you’re going through, it can make your move so much easier. Expat communities provide a support network that can help you navigate everything from local customs to legal paperwork and healthcare. Whether it’s getting a referral to a doctor, figuring out the best places to shop, or simply knowing that someone has your back, having a community around you creates a sense of safety and security—two essential ingredients for feeling at home.

In Panama, there are online Facebook groups where you can go to ask a specific question—like, where can I find a dog trainer? Or where can I buy a Eucalyptus tree? But more importantly, there are in-person groups where you can chitchat with other expats, share experiences over a glass of wine, or learn a new sport such as salsa dancing or pickleball.

#5: Humans Are Wired for Connection
Here’s a fun fact: humans are hardwired for community. There is a neuroscientist from California who wrote a book, that says one of the truest things you’ll ever hear as an expat. He said that social connections are as important to our survival as food and shelter. If you want to read the book, you can get it on Amazon. It’s by Matthew Lieberman and it’s called: Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Connect.

The fact that we need connection with other humans as much as we need food and shelter really resonated with my journey as an expat living in Panama. Being part of a group gives us a sense of belonging … it gives us a purpose… and this is especially important when you’re in unfamiliar surroundings. Being part of an expat community can help fill this void that’s within each of us… and remind us that we’re not alone.

If you’re considering living abroad, whether it’s in Panama or somewhere else, make sure that there is an expat community for you to connect with, especially if it’s your first time living abroad. This is literally one of the most important things that will help make--or break—your new life.

#4: Networking and Opportunities Open Up
Being plugged into an expat community isn’t just about emotional support—it can also lead to new professional and personal opportunities. Expats often bring a variety of skills and perspectives, and being part of a group means you have ACCESS to those opportunities. When living abroad, things change. Maybe you came for a job and the job isn’t working out. Maybe you came to open a business but you’re running into issues you hadn’t thought about. Networking with other professional expats helps you figure out solutions to problems you couldn’t have foreseen. Plus, a strong network can be your ticket to opening doors you might not have access to otherwise.

#3: Community Boosts Your Happiness]
Did you know that people with strong social networks are consistently happier—and even live longer? The Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the longest-running studies on human happiness, found that meaningful relationships are among the biggest predictors of happiness and longevity.

Many of us are familiar with the concept of Blue Zones, thanks to the Netflix documentary "Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones."

These regions are known for their residents' exceptional longevity and well-being. A common thread among these communities is a strong sense of social connection and support. Regular interactions with friends and family, shared activities, and a collective sense of purpose contribute significantly to their happiness and health.

As an expat, integrating into a community can provide similar benefits. Connecting with others who understand the unique joys—and challenges—of living abroad can help to reduce stress and enhances overall well-being. By building meaningful relationships in your new environment, you're not just making friends—you're investing in a happier, healthier future.

#2: Shared Experiences and Shared Wisdom
One of the greatest things about joining an expat community is the shared wisdom and experiences you’ll gain. Every expat has a story, and more often than not, they’ve been through the same struggles you’ll face. Whether it’s dealing with culture shock, figuring out banking systems, navigating through bureaucratic red tape, or learning a new language, the community is there to help. You’ll learn tips and tricks that ONLY fellow expats can share—things that can save you time, money, and stress in your new country.

#1: Expat Communities Make You Feel at Home
And the number one reason? Community makes a new place feel like home. Moving abroad is about more than just changing your address—it’s about building a life. When you have a group of people who understand your journey, celebrate your wins, and support you through the challenges, you’ll find that even the most unfamiliar place starts to feel like home.

Expat communities often organize social events, group activities, and travel trips that can help you explore new places and create lasting memories with people who are just as eager to experience it all as you are.
They can also help you celebrate your own country’s important festivals. As an American, Thanksgiving has always been an important holiday. The great part about celebrating Thanksgiving in Panama, is that I’m able to share it with my American friends here… as well as my non-American friends who have come to love eating Turkey with me in the middle of the afternoon on the last Thursday in November.

Whether it’s a potluck dinner, a hiking expedition, or a weekend beach trip, having a group to share those experiences with makes life abroad so much richer.

Closing
So, there you have it—7 powerful reasons why plugging into an expat community is essential for anyone living abroad. It’s not just about making friends; it’s about creating a life where you feel connected, supported, and truly at home.

If you’re planning a move or are already living abroad, let me know in the comments below how community has impacted your journey.

Grocery Shopping in Panama Like a Pro: 8 Essential Tips!

11/26/2024

Imagine stepping into a grocery store where you don’t push your cart to the register, you pay for your cans of soda one at a time, and you even need your ID just to pay for groceries. Sounds a little different, right? Well, that’s grocery shopping in Panama for you! Whether you’re an expat trying to adjust …or a visitor curious about the local quirks…today, I’m breaking down the 8 must-know tips for navigating Panama’s grocery stores like a pro. And trust me, you’ll want to hear number one.

#8 – Weigh and Tag Your Produce
In Panama, before you head to checkout, you’ll need to make a quick stop in the produce section to weigh and tag your fruits and veggies. Yes, you have to do this BEFORE heading to the checkout line! There’s a dedicated staff member who weighs everything for you and adds a price sticker right on the bag. Forget this step, and you’ll hold up the line as they send your fruits and veggies BACK to the produce department to get bagged and tagged. So, next time you grab that papaya, make sure it’s properly weighed and tagged.

#7 – No Coupons Allowed
Are you used to clipping coupons and hunting for deals? Well, you can leave those at home because Panamanian grocery stores don’t accept coupons…not even digital ones. But here’s the good news: most stores offer loyalty programs, and signing up is easy. You’ll earn points that can be redeemed for discounts or even free items. So, while the coupon game might not be a thing here, you can still save by giving your loyalty number… usually your ID number or your phone number. After all, who doesn’t love free stuff?

#6 – Don’t Push Your Cart Through the Payment Line
One of the quirkiest things about grocery shopping in Panama is that you leave your cart behind at the checkout line. That’s right, you don’t push the cart through. A helpful bag boy will ask if you want help. If you nod your head yes, he’ll unload everything from your cart onto the conveyor belt for you. I remember the first time I stood there awkwardly, wondering why no one was moving their cart—rookie mistake!

Some of the cash register lanes aren’t even wide enough for the cart. So once your cart is empty, just push it next to the magazine rack. It seems disorganized, but within a few minutes, a store employee will round up all the empty carts and clear the aisles. So, once you’re at check-out, just park your cart, let the bag boys do their thing, and enjoy a few moments of doing absolutely nothing!

#5 – Bring Cash for Tips
Here’s something you’ll want to keep in mind: the bag boys who help you at checkout work solely for tips… they don’t get a base hourly wage. Because they’re hustling for tips, they’ll load your groceries onto the conveyor belt, bag them for you, and even carry them to your car. It’s customary to tip around 50 cents for small orders, $1 for larger loads, and a few dollars if you’re filling your entire SUV. Trust me, these guys are lifesavers when you have more bags than hands! Just make sure to have some small change ready—tipping is part of the culture here.

#4 - Show Your ID for Big Purchases
You’re at the checkout, the cashier rings up your items, and suddenly, you’re asked for your ID—whether you’re using a credit card or paying with a $100 bill, no ID… no groceries. Verifying your ID is a standard security measure here, so always have your ID handy. This might feel a little strange if you’re used to paying with plastic in other countries, but it’s just how things are done in Panama. Here’s a Bonus tip: you won’t need to show your ID when using smaller bills, so if you want to help speed things along, use twenties, tens, fives and ones.

#3 – No Free Bags, So BYOB!
In Panama, you’ll need to bring your own bag or buy one at checkout. That’s right, no free plastic or paper bags here. Panama is on the eco-friendly bandwagon, and it’s all about reusable bags. So, make sure you keep a stash in your car or backpack for those last-minute grocery runs. And if you forget, don’t worry—you can always buy a reusable or biodegradable bag at the store…but it’s better to save that dollar for ceviche later.

#2 – Local vs Imported Goods
Panama’s grocery stores are packed with choices, but here’s the deal: imported goods can be pricey. Think double the price for that box of your favorite U.S. crackers or tub of Philadelphia cream cheese. However, the local products are not only fresher but much more affordable. So, if you want to save some cash and try something new, stick to local brands. Whether it’s coffee, snacks or cream cheese, you’ll find plenty of high-quality Panamanian goods to fill your cart …without breaking the bank.

#1 – Everything is Sold in "Eaches"
And finally, here’s the number one thing you must know about grocery shopping in Panama: everything is sold in “eaches.” That’s right—no bulk packs of soda or water bottles here. Want a 12-pack of soda? You can pickup the case, but because they’re priced individually, the cashier may need to break open the case to scan one of the cans. Need only one carrot or one stalk of celery? You can break open a package and take out what you need. Just have it re-weighed and tagged. It’s an adjustment, but it’s all part of the quirky charm of shopping here. So, embrace the “eaches” lifestyle and take your time choosing the perfect carrot!

Closing:
There you have it—your grocery shopping adventure in Panama all wrapped up like a neatly bagged bunch of bananas. Whether you're weighing your veggies, tipping the bag boys, or pulling out your ID before they ask, you’re now fully equipped to shop like a local. Just remember: no coupons, no free bags, and definitely no cart-pushing at checkout! So, grab your reusable bags, a few coins for tipping, and maybe a little patience for those ID checks. Happy shopping, and don't forget—practice makes grocery-perfect!

See you in Panama!

Panama Weather Tips: What You NEED to Know

11/23/2024

Panama’s weather is a tropical paradise—think year-round sunshine and warm breezes. If you’re planning a trip or thinking about making Panama your home, you’ll want to know the real deal about its weather.

Today, I’m here to share everything you need to know about Panama’s unique weather patterns. If you're wondering what to pack or when to book that plane ticket, stick around—this countdown is exactly what you need to plan your perfect time in Panama.

Number 5: Dry Season
From December to April, Panama shines with non-stop sunshine and clear skies. This is when Panama's outdoor life really comes alive. Think beach days, hiking through national parks, and enjoying rooftop dinners with no rain in sight.

It’s also the busiest time for tourists—and the most expensive for hotels and rental apartments--so make sure to plan ahead if you’re visiting during the dry season. Trust me, you don’t want to miss those stunning sunsets on the Pacific Coast!

Here’s a Pro Tip: Be sure to bring a hand fan if you run hot, don’t forget your sunglasses. The tropical sun might be brighter than you’re used to.

Number 4: Rainy Season
From May to November, Panama transforms into a lush, green paradise. Yes, it rains, but don’t let that stop you! Rain in Panama usually comes in short, refreshing bursts—followed by gorgeous sunshine. Although the weather apps will all show you day after day of rain icons, the reality is that it doesn’t rain every day in rainy season. And when it does rain, it’s often for just 20 minutes or so.

So don’t let the weather channel deter you from experiencing Panama during rainy season. If you’re like me and love the beauty of nature, rainy season is the time to experience Panama's waterfalls, rainforests, and cooler temperatures. Just pack a travel umbrella, and you’re good to go!

Number 3: Humidity
With Panama’s tropical climate, it can feel humid, especially near the coasts. But here’s a pro tip: if the humidity bothers you, head up to the highlands like Boquete or El Valle for cooler temps and less humidity. Although your body may not be used to the humidity, your skin will love it. This is one of the little-known secrets as to why people who’ve moved to Panama actually look younger after a year or two of living here.

If you need a break from the heat, Boquete’s cool mountain breeze is perfect for a quick getaway or even a permanent home. You’ll still get Panama’s beauty, but without the warmer temperatures.

Keep in mind that the humidity changes from day to day. If you don’t mind a bit of humidity now and then, Panama City, Playa Bonita, or the Coronado Beach Area are great options for lifestyle.

Number 2: Microclimates
Believe it or not, Panama’s weather can change dramatically depending on where you are. In the city, it’s warm. In the Coronado beaches area, it’s a bit hotter… but it’s also breezier. And with only a short drive to the highlands, it’s much cooler. Depending on where you are, each microclimate makes you feel like you’re [shrug] in a different country.

The beauty of Panama is that you can go from tropical beaches to cool mountain towns in just a couple of hours. So whether you’re a beach bum, a mountain lover, or a city slicker…Panama’s got you covered.

Number 1: Best Time to Visit
If you’re planning your dream trip to Panama, you’ll get postcard-perfect weather, endless outdoor adventures, and plenty of local festivals to enjoy in dry season.

But don’t rule out the rainy season! It’s less crowded, more affordable, and you’ll see Panama at its most beautiful. Either way, Panama’s weather is just one of the many reasons you’ll fall in love with this country.

That’s it for today’s countdown on The Panama Podcast. Thanks for watching, and I hope you found this guide helpful. Drop a Comment below and let me know your favorite type of weather—all-out sunshine or a warm tropical rain! we share 5 essential tips that will help you navigate the unique climate of this beautiful Central American country. Whether you're exploring the lush rainforests, relaxing on stunning beaches, or discovering vibrant city life in Panama City, knowing what to expect weather-wise is crucial for a memorable experience.

Want to Be Happier? Move to One of the Happiest Places on Earth: Panama!

11/19/2024

Did you know that Panama is one of the happiest countries in the world? That’s right! Studies show that if you’re feeling a bit low, moving to a place with a high happiness quotient—like Panama—can actually boost your happiness.

Today, we’re diving into three reasons why this little tropical paradise can make a BIG difference in your happiness. Stay tuned as we breakdown break down why living in one of the world’s happiest countries could be just the mood boost you’ve been looking for.

#1: Panama is Ranked as One of the Happiest Countries in the World
First up, let’s talk about the stats. According to the Gallup Global Emotions Report (yes, that’s a real thing), Panama consistently ranks among the happiest countries globally. This survey measures things like positive experiences, feelings of purpose, and overall life satisfaction. And guess what? Panamanians score high across the board.

But why? It’s not just the sunny weather, although that certainly helps!
It’s a blend of close-knit family culture, appreciation for the simple pleasures in life, and the community-oriented nature of Panamanian society. Panamanians know how to prioritize happiness and quality of life, and it shows.

#2: Moving to a Happier Country Can Make YOU Happier
Now, here’s an interesting fact from research by the World Happiness Report: if you move to a country with a high happiness quotient, your own happiness level is likely to rise too!

Why? Psychologists say it’s because happiness is contagious. When you’re surrounded by people who value joy, gratitude, and community, it’s almost impossible not to pick up on it. In Panama, expats often report feeling happier after they move—not just because they’re living in a beautiful place, but because they’re immersed in a culture that values happiness.

So, if you’re looking for a way to increase your own happiness, moving to a place like Panama could be a game-changer.

#3: Panama Offers a Low-Stress, High-Quality Lifestyle
Finally, let’s look at lifestyle. Panama offers a slower, less stressful pace of life that allows people to focus on what really matters. Whether it’s time spent with friends, exploring nature, or enjoying the vibrant local culture, Panama makes it easy to find balance.

There’s no “us” and “them” madness here dividing the country, and that alone can make a huge difference. Panama’s culture encourages people to relax, connect with loved ones, and appreciate the moment. And when stress levels go down, happiness goes up—it’s that simple!

Closing
So, there you have it: three powerful reasons why Panama might just be the key to boosting your happiness. Moving to a happy country can make YOU happier, and since Panama is one of the happiest countries in the world, the lifestyle here can help make your current stress a thing of the past. If you’re ready to embrace more joy and less stress, Panama is waiting with open arms.

Thanks for watching, and remember—sometimes a little change in scenery can make a world of difference!

See you in Panama!

Are you dreaming of the perfect place to retire? Imagine this… you wake up to warm sunshine, breathtaking views, and a low cost of living that lets you STRETCH your retirement fund for a BETTER lifestyle. You’ve worked your whole life. Don’t you deserve a retirement that’s exciting AND affordable? If so, stick around, because we’re counting down the Top 10 reasons why you should consider PANAMA as your ultimate retirement destination. If you’re in retirement mode, trust me, you won’t want to miss this!

#10: Accessibility & Proximity to North America
With Panama’s recent airport expansion of almost a billion dollars, Panama is more accessible than ever. In fact, Panama is just a short flight away from major North American cities like Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, and Toronto. With direct flights available from many locations around the globe, you can easily visit family and friends without the hassle of long, exhausting travel days and multiple layovers. Plus, Panama is in the same time zone as much of North America, spending half the year in Eastern Standard Time … along with New York and Miami… and half the year in Central Standard Time… along with Chicago and Dallas. This means you can stay connected WITHOUT worrying about awkward time differences.

#9: Affordable Healthcare
Quality, affordable healthcare is essential in retirement, and Panama delivers just that—at a fraction of the cost you might be used to in the U.S. Panama boasts excellent private hospitals, many with doctors trained in North America or Europe. And the best part? You can get top-notch care without breaking the bank. Your entire bill will often be lower than your deductible would be in the U.S. But it doesn’t stop there. Health insurance is also much cheaper, often just a few hundred dollars a month, making it easy to maintain your health …while living comfortably.

#8: Expat-Friendly Community
Panama is home to a large, welcoming expat population, which makes adjusting to life here much easier. Whether you’re looking for advice on navigating local customs or just want to make new friends, the expat community in Panama is ready to help. There are clubs, events, and social gatherings designed specifically for retirees, so you’ll never feel isolated or alone. One of the most surprising things to most expats is how easy it is to make friends with other expats in Panama. Because everyone is outside of their home country, people are more welcoming and more open to new experiences.

#7: Modern Infrastructure
Unlike other popular retirement destinations, Panama offers well-developed infrastructure that includes reliable electricity, clean water, high-speed internet, and modern roads. In fact, Panama has committed almost 20 billion dollars over the next 5 years to infrastructure projects. You’ll also find familiar amenities like shopping malls, movie theaters, and even big-box stores like PriceSmart. All these conveniences make day-to-day living easy …and comfortable.

#6: Natural Beauty and Biodiversity
Imagine waking up every day surrounded by some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes. Panama’s stunning natural beauty and biodiversity make it a great place to live. The country is a haven for nature lovers, offering countless opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, bird watching, and snorkeling. With over 1,500 islands to explore, you’ll never run out of new places to discover. Plus, Panama is one of the few places where you can have breakfast on the Caribbean, lunch overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and dinner birdwatching in the jungle. From pristine beaches to lush rainforests and majestic mountains, Panama truly has it all.

#5: Low Cost of Living
At number 5, we have Panama’s low cost of living. One of the biggest draws for retirees is how far your dollar can stretch here. Housing, groceries, dining out, and entertainment are all much more affordable compared to the U.S. or Europe. This allows extra money for luxuries like maid service ….and wine. Whether you’re on a fixed income or just want to enjoy more of life’s pleasures, Panama allows you to live well without breaking the bank.

4: The Pensionado Program
Panama’s Pensionado Program is one of the best retirement programs in the world, offering substantial discounts to retirees on things like doctors visits, lab work, entertainment, dining out, and even airfare. Plus, if you’re a Pensionado, you get a special lines in banks, making you an instant VIP. To qualify, you just need a pension income of at least $1,000 per month. These discounts can add up quickly, making retirement in Panama even more affordable …and enjoyable.

#3: Stable Economy and Dollarized Currency
Panama uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency, which eliminates the risk of currency fluctuations and makes it easier for retirees to manage their finances. The country’s economy is also one of the most stable in Latin America, driven by the Panama Canal, international banking, and trade. In fact, over 120 multinational corporations use Panama as their Latin American headquarters. This stability gives you peace of mind, knowing your investments and savings are secure."

#2: Pleasant Climate
Say goodbye to harsh winters and brutal summers… and say hello to year-round nice weather! Panama’s tropical climate means you’ll enjoy plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures, with the average temperature hovering around 80°F (27°C). Whether you prefer the cooler mountain highlands or the warmer beaches, Panama offers a climate that is perfect for your golden years.

#1: Diverse Lifestyle Options
And finally….the number 1 reason why Panama is a great place to retire: Diverse lifestyle options. Whether you’re looking for the hustle and bustle of city life in Panama City, the tranquil beaches of Coronado, or the cooler mountain towns like Boquete, Panama has something for everyone. You can enjoy a relaxed, laid-back lifestyle or dive into a vibrant social scene. This diversity means that no matter what kind of retirement you’re dreaming of, you can find it in Panama.
