Panama's SECRET Fiber Optic Cables UNDER the Sea

12/26/2024

Imagine sending an email, streaming your favorite show, or video chatting with loved ones—this is all made possible by cables running beneath the ocean. What if I told you Panama, known for its iconic canal, plays an equally important role in keeping the digital world connected? That’s right! Just like the canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for trade, Panama’s subsea fiber optic cables connect continents for global communication. Stick around to discover how this tiny country keeps the world wired—and why it’s more than just a tropical paradise.

Imagine the internet as a vast, invisible web connecting every corner of the globe. At the heart of this web are undersea fiber optic cables—thin strands of glass laid across ocean floors, transmitting data at the speed of light. These cables handle over 95% of international data traffic, making them essential to our digital lives.

Now, picture Panama, a slender bridge between North and South America, bordered by the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This unique geography doesn't just make it ideal for the Panama Canal; it also positions the country as a crossroads for trans-oceanic fiber optic cables. Just as ships traverse the canal to shorten their journeys, data zips through Panama's cables, connecting continents more efficiently.

Several major undersea cable systems are in Panama, including the Pacific Caribbean Cable System, known as PCCS, and Google's Curie cable network. The PCCS, stretching over 6,000 kilometers, links the U.S., the Caribbean, and South America, with landing points in Maria Chiquita—on the Caribbean side of Panama, and Balboa—on the Pacific side of Panama. This system boasts a design capacity of 80 terabits per second.

But how fast is that? Let’s break it down. 1 terabit is 1,000 gigabits or 1 million megabits, so 80 terabits per second equals 80 million megabits per second.

To put this into perspective, to stream a standard HD Netflix movie, it requires about 5 megabits per second.
  • So, 1 gigabit can handle 200 HD Netflix streams simultaneously.
  • And 80 terabits can handle 16 million HD Netflix streams … at the exact same time. That’s like streaming a high def video to every single household in Canada—all at once!

That’s a lot of connectivity… and that’s just one of the networks.

In 2019, Google expanded its Curie network—a private subsea network connecting California to Chile—to include a branch landing in Panama. This addition not only enhances Panama's connectivity, but it also integrates Panama into Google's vast global infrastructure, benefiting both local and international data exchange.

As you can see, Panama knows how important its location is for global communications. Because of this, Panama has invested heavily in infrastructure. One example is the Panama Digital Gateway, created by Sparkle. If you haven’t heard of Sparkle before, it’s an A-List megacorporation with a market cap of almost a billion dollars.

But here’s where it gets interesting. The tiny country of Panama is an important part of Sparkle’s network. The Panama Digital Gateway connects networks from across the Americas. It also links to Sparkle’s MASSIVE global fiber network, which spans over 600,000 kilometers.

To put six hundred thousand kilometers into perspective …that’s enough fiber optic cable to circle the Earth 15 times! Imagine wrapping a giant cable around our planet over and over and over—it’s an incredible distance that shows just how vast Sparkle’s global network really is.

When you think about it, Panama plays a similar role in communications as it does with the canal. It helps connect different parts of the world quickly and reliably. By hosting important undersea cables, Panama makes sure data—like emails and video calls—moves smoothly across the globe.

So, next time you stream a video or send an email message, remember that Panama's unique position and infrastructure play a vital part in making that possible. Panama isn’t just a canal country; it's a digital linchpin in our interconnected world.

Thank you for joining us on this journey through Panama's little-known digital landscape under the sea.

Planning a trip to Panama? Before you book that flight, there are 10 insider tips you NEED to know to avoid common travel mistakes and make your experience unforgettable. From saving big on transportation to uncovering the best restaurants in Panama, this guide is packed with secrets even seasoned travelers wish they’d known. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, these tips will help you navigate Panama like a pro and make every moment count. If Panama’s on your radar, you won’t want to miss this!

#10: Use Uber in Panama City
Getting around Panama City is easy and affordable when you use Uber. It’s reliable, safe, and significantly cheaper than taxis. Plus, you won’t need to haggle over prices or worry about getting lost. If you’ve used Uber in your home country, you might think of it as an expensive option. But in Panama, it’s typically just a few dollars to get from one part of the city to another. For city travel, Uber is hands-down the best choice.

#9: Stay Safe with Common Sense
Panama is one of the safest countries in Latin America, but it’s still smart to use common sense. Stick to tourist areas, avoid going off alone with strangers, and don’t flash cash or expensive jewelry. Always stay aware of your surroundings, and you’ll have a worry-free trip.
For more about Safety in Panama, be sure to check out this video.

#8: Choose an Airbnb Over a Hotel
For more space and better value, try renting an Airbnb instead of staying at a hotel. Vacation rentals are typically less expensive, offer more amenities, and feel like a home away from home. Want to skip the extra fees? Book directly through us at ChoosePanamaRentals.com for a seamless experience.

#7: Save Money by Traveling During Low Season
When it’s cold in North America, the snowbirds flock to Panama. This is high season in Panama, and people often book their accommodations a year in advance. If you’re on a budget, plan your trip between May and November, which is Panama’s low season. Rates for lodging and activities are much cheaper, and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds. Yes, it’s the rainy season, but rain typically falls only 10 to 20 minutes or so in the afternoon a few days a week. By the time you grab a cup of coffee, the rain will be over and the sun will be shining once again.

#6: Rent from 5-Star Vacation Rental Hosts
When booking a vacation rental, always look for hosts with a 5-star rating. This ensures you’ll avoid dirty, dated, or dingy accommodations. A little research goes a long way in making sure your stay is comfortable and hassle-free. And in case you’re wondering, I’m a 5-Star host. We have over a decade of experience in the vacation rental business, and we know how to make your Panama vacation one of the best you’ve ever had. I’ll give you a hint… it always starts with a complimentary bottle of wine.

#5: Start Your Sightseeing Early
Tourist attractions like the Panama Canal and Monkey Island are incredible—but they get crowded fast. Beat the rush by starting your day early. You’ll have a more peaceful experience and can relax after lunch, maybe by a pool or beach, after you’ve checked off the must-sees.

#4: Get Restaurant Recommendations
Panama has a vibrant food scene, but not all restaurants are created equal. A little planning can make the difference between a memorable meal and a mediocre one. Ask locals or your vacation rental host for recommendations to find hidden gems that will tantalize your taste buds.

For a list of our up-to-date restaurant recommendations, to go ChoosePanama.com/restaurants.

#3: Explore Beyond the City
Panama City is amazing, but don’t stop there. Take a day trip to the beaches or the mountains. Visit Coronado for a laid-back vibe or El Valle for lush greenery and a cooler climate. Exploring outside the city gives you a fuller picture of what Panama has to offer.

#2: Pack for the Weather
Panama’s tropical climate means it’s warm and humid year-round, but you’ll want to be prepared for sudden rain showers. Pack lightweight, breathable clothes, comfortable walking shoes, and a compact rain jacket or umbrella. Trust me, you’ll thank me later!

#1: Embrace Panama’s Local Culture
And the number one tip? Immerse yourself in the local culture. Panama’s people are warm, friendly, and eager to share their country with you. Learn a few Spanish phrases, try local dishes like sancocho and fresh ceviche, and enjoy the lively music and festivals. It’s these experiences that will make your trip unforgettable.

Closing
There you have it—10 essential tips to make your trip to Panama in 2025 the best it can be. Whether you’re coming for a vacation, scoping out a place to live, or just curious about what Panama has to offer, these tips will help you travel smarter and enjoy more.

This is Panama City, Panama

12/18/2024

Welcome to Panama City—where ancient history collides with a sleek, modern skyline, and adventure is waiting around every corner! From tropical escapes to gourmet dining, Panama’s capital city has it all. Today, I’m counting down the 10 must-know things about Panama City that will have you feeling like a local, whether you’re planning to visit or you’re ready to make the big move!

#10 – Multiplaza Mall: Shop ‘Til You Drop
If you love shopping, you’re going to love Multiplaza Mall. This is where Panama City’s fashionistas go to get their fix, and it’s packed with designer brands, local boutiques, and some pretty fantastic restaurants. You can easily spend an entire day here and still feel like you missed something. And yes, they have air conditioning, which is a big plus on hot days in this tropical city!

#9 – Panama Viejo: Where It All Began
Panama Viejo is the ORIGINAL Panama City. Founded in 1519, this historic site is where it all started—until the pirate Henry Morgan burned it down in 1671 as part of his quest to plunder the wealth of the Spanish Empire. You see, at that time, Panama City was a critical part of Spain’s trade route and it served as the primary transfer point for silver and gold before it was shipped to Spain. Today, you can walk through the ruins of the old city, climb the tower, and imagine what life was like in Panama’s early days. It’s a history lesson with a view!

#8 – The Cinta Costera: Panama’s Front Row Seat
For the best views of the skyline and the Pacific, head to Cinta Costera. This long coastal park is perfect for a morning jog, a sunset stroll, or just people-watching. You can even rent a bike or hop on a scooter to take in the whole scene. It’s where the city comes to play, so grab some ceviche from a nearby stand and enjoy the show!

#7 – The Biomuseo: A Splash of Color and Culture
Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Biomuseo is hard to miss with its bright, colorful structure. But it’s what’s inside that really matters—this museum tells the fascinating story of Panama’s biodiversity and how this tiny isthmus changed the world. It’s fun, educational, and a great place to cool off during the heat of the day.

By the way, I REALLY want to interview Frank Gehry for The Panama Podcast, especially because he’s married to a Panamanian. If anyone knows how to get in contact with him directly, please leave me a comment below.

#6 – Mercado de Mariscos: Seafood Lovers’ Paradise
Calling all seafood lovers! The Mercado de Mariscos, or seafood market, is where you’ll find the freshest catch of the day. From shrimp to octopus to the best ceviche in town, this market is a foodie’s dream. It’s also where locals stock up on fresh fish, and the energy here is electric. Just be prepared for a little hustle and bustle—it’s all part of the experience!"

#5 – Ancon Hill: The Best Views in Town
"For a bird’s eye view of Panama City, Ancon Hill is the place to be. This 650-foot-tall hill is covered in lush rainforest and is home to sloths, toucans, and more. After a short hike to the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views of the city, the canal, and the surrounding jungle. It’s a peaceful retreat from the hustle of city life—and perfect for those Instagram-worthy shots!"

#4 – Amador Causeway: Gateway to the Islands
"If you want to feel the sea breeze and get out of the city, head to the Amador Causeway. This long road connects Panama City to three small islands and offers stunning views of the ocean, the skyline, and ships waiting to enter the Panama Canal. It’s also lined with great restaurants, perfect for enjoying a meal while watching the sun go down."

#3 – The Panama Canal: The Engineering Marvel
We can’t talk about Panama City without mentioning the Panama Canal. Sure, it’s a tourist hotspot, but it’s also an impressive feat of engineering that changed global trade forever. Watching those massive ships squeeze through the locks is a sight you won’t forget. Here’s a Fun fact: Did you know it takes about 8 to 10 hours for a ship to pass through the entire canal?

#2 – Casco Viejo: The Historic Heart
After Pirate Henry Morgan burned down Panama Vieja, the Spanish authorities moved Panama City to what’s now Casco Viejo. As it sits along the coast, it was a more defensible location. Now, Casco Viejo is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s a beautiful maze of colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and charming plazas. It’s like stepping back in time … except with rooftop bars and some of the city’s best restaurants. Whether you’re exploring its history or sipping a cocktail with views of the modern skyline, Casco Viejo is the beating heart of Panama City.

#1 – The Vibe: A City Like No Other
Panama City is a place where old meets new…where the skyscrapers are as impressive as the jungle surrounding them…and where the energy is contagious. Whether you’re here for the nightlife, the culture, the food, or just the sunshine, Panama City is truly one of a kind. It’s no wonder expats from all over the world are flocking here to call it home!

Sure, the Pensionado Visa might bring you here, but these 11 surprising reasons will make you WANT to stay—and keep you loving every moment of your retirement in Panama.

In and around Panama City, you can get fiber optic Internet that will give you 1 gigabyte download speed, and the same speed to upload. This is especially important when you’re uploading photos and videos of your new life in Panama… to share with your family and friends.

#9: A Foodie’s Dream Come True
I’m a foodie, and Panama’s restaurant scene was one of the deciding factors for me when I moved here. Not surprising, Panama’s culinary scene is as diverse as its people. #8: Fresh, Clean Drinking Water
While many countries are struggling to provide clean water, Panama has an abundance of fresh water. The country is crisscrossed by rivers, lakes, and streams, and clean drinking water is readily available. This is a huge plus because you don’t have to worry about buying or boiling your water… and you don’t have to worry about Montezuma’s revenge!

#7: A Gateway to the World
Thanks to Tocumen International Airport, Panama is a gateway to the world. Located in Panama City, this key international airport is known as the "Hub of the Americas.” Thanks to the recent airport expansion that doubled the number of boarding gates and tripled the number of passengers that could be processed each year, and connects you to over 80 destinations worldwide. This makes Panama an easy hub for all the travel and exploration you have planned. Plus, once you get your pensionado visa, you can get a 25% discount on travel that originates in Panama. This surplus of cash alone can fund your retirement in Panama.

#6: A Safe Haven from Natural Disasters
Panama is one of the safest countries in the region when it comes to natural disasters. It’s outside the hurricane belt, it has no active volcanoes, and it experiences minimal seismic activity. You can enjoy peace of mind while living here. Plus, as a big side perk, this lack of natural disasters keeps your homeowner’s insurance dirt cheap.

Watch this video to learn why Panama doesn't get hurricanes.

#5: Panama’s Growing Eco-Tourism Scene
Eco-tourism is booming in Panama, with opportunities to explore unspoiled rainforests, indigenous communities, and sustainable resorts. As a retiree, you can enjoy activities like birdwatching, hiking, and eco-friendly adventures, knowing you’re supporting conservation efforts.

#4: Top-Notch Banking System
Panama has one of the most robust and secure banking systems in Latin America. With options for multi-currency accounts and a strong tradition of privacy, Panama makes managing your finances simple and secure.

Panama’s lifestyle naturally promotes health and wellness. With fresh food, clean air, and outdoor activities like hiking, snorkeling, and yoga retreats, it’s easier to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle here than in many other places. In fact, many people look and feel younger once they’ve moved to Panama, and many others lose weight, thanks to the healthy lifestyle.

#2: Thriving Art and Music Scene
Panama’s art and music culture is thriving, from jazz festivals in Boquete to street art in Casco Viejo. Retirees can immerse themselves in local creativity or even participate in the vibrant expat-led workshops and classes. 7 Things You Must Know About Panama's Tax System

12/16/2024

Are you dreaming of living in paradise but worried about navigating the tax system in a new country? Stop right there—because Panama’s tax system might just be your golden ticket! Imagine keeping more of your hard-earned money while living the dream in a beachfront property. Whether you’re retiring or investing, knowing how taxes work in Panama can literally … change your life. In today’s episode, I’m revealing the 7 things you MUST know about Panama’s tax system—secrets that could save you thousands of dollars every single year. Stay tuned, because what you learn today could be the key to unlocking your perfect lifestyle in paradise!

#7 – Panama is a Territorial Tax System
First things first… Panama has a territorial tax system. What does that mean? It means that Panama ONLY taxes income earned within Panama itself. If you’re earning money from investments, businesses, or employment outside Panama, it’s not subject to Panama’s income tax. So, if you’re retired and your income comes from pensions, rental properties, or investments back home, Panama won’t take a bite out of that. Pretty nice, right?

#6 – Low Personal Income Tax
If you choose to work in Panama—whether you’re running a business here or you’re employed by an actual company—Panama’s personal income tax rates are relatively low. There’s a progressive tax system, with rates ranging from 0% to 25%. The first $11,000 you make is tax-free, and then it gradually goes up from there. It’s actually quite reasonable compared to many other countries, especially if you’re coming from a high-tax country like the U.S. or Europe.

#5 – Corporate Tax in Panama
If you’re thinking about setting up a business in Panama, you’ll want to know that the corporate tax rate is a flat 25% before write-offs or tax credits. And again, this applies to income earned within Panama. So, if your business has a foreign branch that services clients outside Panama, you won’t pay taxes on that foreign income. It's a big reason why so many international businesses have set up shop here.

#4 – No Capital Gains Tax on Foreign Investments
Here’s another win for expats: there’s no capital gains tax on foreign investments! If you’re investing in the stock market back in the U.S. or holding real estate Europe, Panama won’t tax the capital gains you make from those investments. However, if you’re buying and selling real estate within Panama, there IS a capital gains tax… but don’t worry—it’s only 10%... significantly lower than in many other countries.

#3 – Property Taxes Are Low (Or Even Nonexistent)
Property taxes in Panama can be incredibly low… as low as half a percent. But better yet, they can even be nonexistent! Panama has a tax exemption for new properties that can last anywhere from 5 to 20 years, depending on when the property was registered along with its value. For example, at Casa Bonita, a beautiful beachfront property near Panama City, there are no property taxes until 2032. And, according to Law 66 enacted in October of 2017, if your main property is valued under $120,000, you won’t pay any property tax at all! For higher-value properties, the rates are progressive but still very manageable.

#2 – Sales Tax is 7%
In Panama, the sales tax—known as ITBMS-- is 7% for most goods and services. This is lower than in many other countries, so your day-to-day shopping, dining, and other expenses are pretty affordable. However, there are higher rates for specific items like alcohol and tobacco. However, some essential goods--like medicine and food at grocery stores-- are exempt from sales tax altogether.

#1 – Tax Treaties and Avoiding Double Taxation Finally, let’s talk about double taxation. Panama has signed tax treaties with several countries, including the U.S., to prevent you from being taxed on the same income twice. For U.S. citizens, this is especially important because the U.S. taxes its citizens on their worldwide income. However, with the right planning and help from a good accountant, you can make sure you’re taking advantage of all the deductions and exemptions available to avoid double taxation. For the tax year 2024, a US citizen can make $126,500 in Panama without the US tax kicking in. Make sure you check the website irs.gov, or contact your US tax accountant for more information.

What You Need to Know About Panama's Weather Right Now

12/15/2024

Picture
Panama is in that tricky transition between rainy season and dry season, and the weather is keeping things interesting. The winds over the Caribbean Sea are easing up, and low-pressure systems over the Pacific are stirring up the skies. Here’s what that means for you:

If you’re in the Caribbean region, expect cloudy mornings with occasional rain or even surprise thunderstorms. Places like the Ngäbe region, Bocas del Toro, northern Veraguas, and parts of Colón could see showers. By afternoon and evening, it’s still cloudy, with more rain and some electrical activity popping up in western areas. Pack an umbrella and maybe some waterproof shoes if you’re heading out!

On the Pacific side, the mornings are calmer—partly cloudy skies and no rain. But don’t let that fool you. By the afternoon, clouds roll in, bringing scattered showers to places like eastern Panama, central Veraguas, Ngäbe, and Chiriquí. If you’re out and about, expect occasional strong winds that might catch you by surprise!

What’s the Temperature Like?
The mornings are nice and cool, with lows between 57°F / 14°C (bring a sweater!) and 75°F / 24°C (sit outside and enjoy the perfect weather). Afternoons warm up to a comfy 82°F / 28°C to 91°F / 33°C—perfect for a beach day.

Heads Up for Outdoor Activities
In the Caribbean, strong winds and rip tides are still a thing, so if you’re planning to hit the water, be cautious. Waves can reach up to 1.82 meters with short breaks between swells. Over in the Pacific, the waves are slightly smaller (around 1.21 meters), but they can sneak up on you with faster intervals.

Also, don’t forget sunscreen! UVB radiation levels are expected to be moderate to very high on both coasts. Even if it’s cloudy, you can still get a sunburn.

Stay safe and plan ahead, whether you’re exploring Panama’s beaches, hiking through the hills, or just grabbing coffee at your favorite spot.

Panama TRAVEL Secrets You Wish You Knew Sooner!

Thinking of moving to Panama? Let me tell you, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made—but there are a few secrets I wish someone had shared with me before I made the leap. These aren’t negatives; they’re the little insider-secrets that could have made my transition smoother and my experience even better. So, whether you’re planning to visit…or you’re just daydreaming about tropical sunsets, stay tuned because these six shocking Panama secrets will blow your mind—in the best way possible! Let’s dive in and make your transition to paradise a whole lot smoother!

#6: The Weather Is Perfect—But It’s Not What You Think!
You might think “tropical paradise” means sunshine 24/7, but Panama’s weather is a bit more nuanced. The country has two seasons: dry season—which is also referred to as summer—and rainy season. And guess what? The rainy season isn’t a dealbreaker. In fact, it’s my favorite time of year! Rain typically falls in the late afternoon, leaving the mornings sunny and lush. Plus, everything looks greener and more alive during this time. If you plan your day right, the weather is a dream.

#5: The Cost of Living Can Be Shockingly Low
I knew Panama was affordable, but I didn’t realize just how much you can stretch your dollar here—if you know where to look and where to shop. Here’s the secret: tourist areas can seem expensive. Restaurants, grocery stores, and services in these spots often cater to travelers, so they’re priced accordingly…often MANY times higher than what you can get elsewhere. But once you learn to shop and eat like a local, the cost of living becomes dramatically cheaper.

For example, instead of shopping at high-end grocery stores that stock imported goods, visit the local mercados for fresh produce at a fraction of the price. Dining out? Skip the touristy restaurants and try a local fonda, where you can enjoy delicious Panamanian meals for just a few dollars. These small shifts make a huge difference in your budget and allow you to experience the authentic side of Panama without overspending. When you want to splurge on a bougie high-end restaurant, you can plenty to choose from. But even the high-end restaurants cost significantly less than similar restaurants in North America.

#4: Driving in Panama Is an Adventure in Itself
One thing I didn’t fully prepare for was driving in Panama. The roads can range from smooth highways to winding, bumpy mountain paths, and local driving habits can feel, well, adventurous. Don’t be surprised if you see a sudden stop, a creative use of lanes, or even people crossing the road far from any marked crosswalk. But here’s the good news: once you get the hang of it, driving in Panama opens up a world of possibilities.

Having a car lets you explore hidden beaches, remote mountain towns, and breathtaking scenery that public transport won’t reach. If you’re planning to rent a car or drive here, my tip is to go with patience, a good map app, and a spirit of adventure. It’s all part of the charm, and trust me, the destinations are worth it!

#3: Panama Uses the US Dollar—Really!
Here’s something that caught me off guard in the best way: Panama doesn’t just accept US dollars—it uses them as its currency. Unlike many countries where dollars are accepted alongside the local currency, in Panama, the US dollar is the currency. It’s a little confusing because when you look up currency rates, you’ll see something called PAB, which is known as the Panamanian Balboa. However, aside from a few Panamanian coins, Panama doesn’t print its own money, but rather it uses the US Dollar as legal tender. Because of this, you won’t need to worry about exchanging money or calculating tricky conversion rates. What you see is what you pay.

This makes Panama incredibly convenient for travelers and expats alike. Whether you’re buying groceries, paying for dinner, or shopping at the local market, transactions are simple and familiar. Even better? Your dollars go further here, thanks to Panama’s affordable cost of living. It’s just another reason why transitioning to life in Panama is easier than you might expect!

#2: The Expat Community Is Your Lifeline
Panama’s expat community is one of its greatest assets. Moving abroad can feel overwhelming, but having a network of like-minded people who’ve been through the same transition makes a world of difference. They’ll share tips, introduce you to local culture, and make you feel at home faster than you’d think. Whether you’re into hiking, book clubs, or simply grabbing coffee, there’s a group for everyone.

If you want to learn why being part of an Expat Community is so important, check out this video.

#1: The Healthcare System Is Surprisingly… Incredible
Looking back, I think I was expecting the healthcare to be second-tier. Here’s the biggest shocker: Panama’s healthcare system is not only affordable but also world-class. Many doctors are U.S.-trained, clinics are modern, and the costs are a fraction of what you’d pay elsewhere. Whether you need a quick check-up or major surgery, you’ll be impressed by the quality and the cost.

But here is where Panama’s healthcare exceeds what you’re used to… the care and the service. Not only can you get same-day appointments, but many of the doctors will give you their personal WhatsApp numbers, so you can call or text if you have a problem. If you don’t reach out, many of them will text the next day to see how you’re doing. That’s a level of care that I never expected.
