Let's dive in and count down the Best Places to Visit in Panama, from 10 to 1!
Number 10: San Blas Islands
Kicking off our list at number 10, we have the stunning San Blas Islands. San Blas is a group of 365 islands… although only 49 of these islands are inhabited. This tropical paradise offers crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches. However, don’t expect to find a five-star resort with craft cocktails anywhere in this turquoise-water oasis. The San Blas Islands are mostly inhabited by the Guna Yala indigenous tribe.
The accommodations in San Blas lean toward “hut on the beach” … and indoor plumbing isn’t always a given. If you want a more bougie experience, charter a sailboat for a relaxing sailing trip. To experience an untouched slice of paradise, San Blas is a great place to spend a few days and unwind.
Number 9: Gamboa Rainforest
Coming in at number 9, is the Gamboa Rainforest. Just a short 30-minute drive from Panama City, Gamboa Rainforest offers a lush, green escape into nature. You can explore the rainforest by aerial tram, boat, or even kayak. Keep an eye out for monkeys, sloths, and a variety of exotic birds.
One thing to note, if you have kids, the monkey island tour in Gamboa Rainforest is a must-see adventure. Keep in mind that you’ll need to get there close to sunrise to catch the monkeys while they’re still hungry. For nature lovers, Gamboa Rainforest is a Panama attraction you won’t want to miss.
Number 8: Biomuseo
At number 8, we have the Biomuseo in Panama City. The BioMuseo—or Bio Museum as we say in English—is located in the tourist zone of Amador Causeway It’s primary-colored, geometric-shaped roof is an important landmark in Panama that can be seen for miles. This museum is dedicated to the biodiversity of Panama.
It was quite the coup for the small country of Panama to get the world-famous architect, Frank Gehry, to design this multi-colored landmark. After all, Gehry is the genius behind awe-inspiring structures around the world, including the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris. The Bio Museum is fun for both kids AND adults, so make sure to add the BioMuseo to YOUR things to do when visiting Panama.
Number 7: Cinta Costera
Sliding in at number 7, is the Cinta Costera in Panama City. The Cinta Costera is a scenic waterfront boulevard that stretches along the bay, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. On any given weekend, you can expect to see people jogging, cycling, and rollerblading along the wide, well-paved paths, or staying fit using the outdoor gym equipment.
You might also come across yoga classes, Zumba sessions, and even outdoor dance parties. These group activities are usually open to the public, providing a fun and social way to stay active. Food vendors and kiosks line the path, offering a variety of snacks and handmade crafts. You can sip ice cold coconut juice, munch on a traditional empanada, or buy handcrafted gifts to take home. The lively atmosphere, combined with the stunning backdrop of the bay, makes weekends at Cinta Costera a truly unique experience.
Number 6: Isla Taboga
Number 6 on our list is Isla Taboga. Just a short 30-minute ferry ride from Panama City, Isla Taboga is a charming island that offers soft sandy beaches and hiking trails with breathtaking photo-ops.
The island has a variety of open-air restaurants offering fresh seafood and traditional Panamanian cuisine. After lunch, explore the quaint village of San Pedro.
Hiking enthusiasts will enjoy the trails leading to panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Panama City skyline. If you’ve got a week in Panama, make sure to include a daytrip to Isla Taboga.
Number 5: El Valle
Halfway through our countdown at number 5 is El Valle de Antón. The town of El Valle is located INSIDE the crater of an extinct volcano. (I bet you haven’t been inside an extinct volcano before.) If you love cool weather, waterfalls, and lush forests, you’ll LOVE El Valle. You can hike beautiful trails, watch colorful birds, and even soak in natural hot springs. Because of the cooler climate and volcanic soil, the flora and fauna are breathtaking. You’ll see wild orchids growing in trees, and flowers growing… well, everywhere! One of the best parts of El Valle is the Mercado de El Valle, an outdoor market where you can buy local crafts, baskets, Panama hats, and ultra-fresh produce. If you love nature and adventure, El Valle is a must-see spot for you!
Number 4: Bocas del Toro
Coming in strong at number 4, we have Bocas del Toro. This group of islands on the Caribbean coast is perfect if you love the beach and all that it has to offer. You can snorkel, dive, and enjoy the VIBRANT marine life. The laid-back vibe and open-air restaurants in Bocas del Toro are great for relaxing. The beaches are beautiful, and the water is crystal clear. Until recently, the lodgings have been [NOD] simple and affordable. But good news if you’re a luxury traveler, because Bocas del Toro now has a few 5-star additions to the hotel line-up, making it more appealing than ever. If you’re looking for an ultra-relaxed beach vacation that’s on “island time,” Bocas del Toro is the place for you to unwind and recharge, whether you’re traveling with your well-loved backpack … or your Louis Vuitton luggage.
Number 3: Boquete
Taking the bronze at number 3 is Boquete. Boquete is located in the highlands of Panama, near the Costa Rica border. It’s famous for its gorgeous flowers, world-class coffee, and scenic hiking trails. Boquete's cool weather is perfect for year-round outdoor activities, from hiking and horseback riding to golf and pickleball. But it’s also a great place to curl up in a hammock with a good book. Don’t forget to visit a coffee plantation while you’re there to see how coffee is grown… and OF COURSE taste some of the best coffee you’ve ever had.
One of the highlights of the week is the Tuesday Market, where expats and locals meet for coffee and chitchat. You can buy everything from fresh bread and pastries to homemade essential oils or handmade scarves. As the sun goes down, Boquete’s restaurant scene will make your tastebuds stand up and dance the salsa. If a slower-paced lifestyle and cooler climate appeal to you, be sure to plan your trip to Panama with a stopover in Boquete.
Number 2: Casco Viejo
Our runner-up at number 2 is Casco Viejo in Panama City. Walking through the historic old town area of Casco Viejo feels like stepping back in time. With its cobblestone streets and colonial buildings, you can FEEL its history as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore historic churches and museums …or browse through the small shops selling locally made molas, jewelry and rum.
While you’re strolling through the streets, taste a coconut snow cone from a street vendor, or people watch in one of the many cafes. As fun as Casco Viejo is during the day, though, it’s even better at night. Start with a sunset cocktail at one of the many rooftop bars. After the sun dips down, dine at a charming outdoor restaurant, or dress to impress and make reservations at one of Casco Viejo’s top-tier restaurants. If you love history, culture, and food, you will find Casco Viejo is a place you’ll want to return to again …and again.
Number 1: Panama Canal
And finally, the number 1 place you must visit in Panama is the iconic Panama Canal. This engineering marvel is a key player in global trade as well as the top contributor to Panama’s economy. It’s an incredible sight to see. One thing to be prepared for, though, is that the Panama Canal is an experience you have to slow down to experience. You can take a tour to watch massive ships navigate through the locks and learn about the canal’s fascinating history. You can also plan to have lunch at the Panama Canal.
There are two different locks you can visit—the Miraflores Locks, which are closer to Panama City, and the Agua Clara Locks, on the Caribbean side. If you have the time to go to the Agua Clara Locks, there are typically fewer people at the visitor center, which means you get a more intimate experience with the Panama Canal. Whichever locks you choose to visit, the Panama Canal is a must-see for anyone visiting Panama.
