As an American expat living in Panama for over a decade now, I've fallen in love with this vibrant country, its rich culture, and its fascinating history. Today, I want to share with you a hidden gem that holds immense significance in Panama's history and has become a must-see tourist destination: Ancon Hill.

Panama, often known for its famous canal, is a country that boasts a unique blend of cultures and a history that is both intriguing and complex. Ancon Hill, a natural wonder situated right in the heart of Panama City, offers a captivating glimpse into the past and present of this beautiful nation. In this blog, I'll take you on a journey through the historical significance of Ancon Hill and explain why it's a destination every traveler should have on their list.

A Brief History of Ancon Hill
Before we delve into the reasons why Ancon Hill is a must-see, let's start with a bit of history.
Ancon Hill, or Cerro Ancón in Spanish, is a 199-meter-high hill located within Panama City. While it may appear to be just another scenic viewpoint at first glance, this hill has played a pivotal role in Panama's history.

Strategic Location
The hill's strategic location overlooking the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal made it of immense importance during the construction of the canal in the early 20th century. It served as a vantage point for overseeing the construction and ensuring its security.

American Influence
During the early 20th century, Panama was effectively under U.S. control due to the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty. This treaty granted the United States control over the Panama Canal Zone and gave them the authority to maintain order in the region. Ancon Hill became a symbol of American influence in Panama.

Symbol of Sovereignty
However, the tide began to turn in the 1970s when the Torrijos-Carter Treaties paved the way for the gradual transfer of control of the Panama Canal to Panama. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter made an historic visit to Panama and handed over control of Ancon Hill to the Panamanian government. This symbolic act marked a significant step towards Panama's sovereignty.

Ancon Hill Today
Now that you have a better understanding of the historical importance of Ancon Hill, let's talk about why it's a must-see tourist destination today.

Breathtaking Panoramic Views
One of the most compelling reasons to visit Ancon Hill is the unparalleled panoramic view it offers. Once you've hiked to the summit, you'll be rewarded with stunning vistas of Panama City, the Pacific Ocean, and the surrounding lush greenery. It's the perfect spot to capture those Instagram-worthy photos and take in the sheer beauty of this tropical paradise.

A Natural Oasis
Despite being in the heart of Panama City, Ancon Hill is a haven of biodiversity. The hill is home to a variety of flora and fauna, making it a prime destination for nature enthusiasts. You might encounter sloths, iguanas, and a plethora of bird species during your hike. It's a reminder that even in the midst of urban development, nature can thrive.

Historical Significance
For history buffs, Ancon Hill offers a unique opportunity to connect with Panama's past. At the summit, you'll find the Panamanian flag waving proudly and a small museum that houses artifacts related to the history of the hill and the Panama Canal. It's a place where you can reflect on the journey from foreign control to sovereignty.

Fitness and Adventure
If you enjoy staying active while traveling, Ancon Hill provides a fantastic hiking experience. The trail to the summit is well-maintained, and the hike is moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for all fitness levels. It's an excellent way to work off those delicious Panamanian meals you'll undoubtedly indulge in during your stay.

Getting the Most Out of Your Visit
Now that you're convinced that Ancon Hill is a must-see, let me share some tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Timing Matters
To enjoy the best views and cooler temperatures, I recommend starting your hike early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The midday sun can be scorching, so it's best to avoid hiking during peak heat hours.

Dress Comfortably
Wear comfortable hiking shoes, breathable clothing, and don't forget sunscreen and a hat. Panama's tropical climate can be unforgiving, so it's essential to stay protected.

Stay Hydrated
Carry plenty of water with you, especially on hot days. Staying hydrated is crucial when hiking, and there are no water sources along the trail.

Respect the Environment
Remember that Ancon Hill is not only a historical site but also a natural reserve. Please do your part to keep it pristine by following designated trails, not disturbing wildlife, and disposing of trash properly.

Learn About Its History
Visit the small museum at the summit to gain a deeper understanding of Ancon Hill's history. It will enrich your experience and help you appreciate its significance.

The Future of Ancon Hill
As an expatriate who has called Panama home for over a decade, I've seen the city evolve and grow over the past decade. Ancon Hill, too, has seen changes, with increased visitor numbers and efforts to preserve its natural beauty. The future of this iconic hill looks promising.

Conservation Efforts
Local organizations and government bodies are actively working to preserve the biodiversity of Ancon Hill. Conservation projects aim to protect the native species and maintain the ecological balance of the area.

Infrastructure Development
Improvements in the hiking trail infrastructure have made it more accessible to visitors. This means that even more people can enjoy the stunning views and learn about its history.

Cultural Events
Occasionally, cultural events and festivals are held on Ancon Hill. Keep an eye out for these events during your visit, as they offer a unique opportunity to experience the local culture in a beautiful natural setting.

Summary
I can't stress enough how remarkable Ancon Hill is. It's a place where history, nature, and culture converge, offering visitors a chance to connect with Panama's past and appreciate its vibrant present. From its strategic importance in the construction of the Panama Canal to its role as a symbol of Panama's sovereignty, Ancon Hill stands as a testament to the nation's resilience and progress.

When you visit Panama, don't miss the opportunity to hike to the summit of Ancon Hill. It's not just a hill; it's a living piece of history, a natural sanctuary, and a place where you can create your own unforgettable memories. So, pack your hiking gear, bring your sense of adventure, and discover the magic of Ancon Hill for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
