Being in Gamboa isn't just about experiencing nature; it's about immersing yourself in it. When you're in the rainforest, you're surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of chirping birds, howling monkeys, and the gentle hum of the Chagres River.
A Haven for Wildlife
One of the most incredible aspects of life in Gamboa is the daily encounters with wildlife. It's not uncommon to spot toucans, sloths, and capuchin monkeys just doing their thing. Birdwatching has become a cherished pastime, and the vibrancy of the rainforest never ceases to amaze me. For bird enthusiasts, Gamboa is a paradise. The rainforest is home to over 500 species of birds, from toucans to harpy eagles. The early morning hours are prime birdwatching time, and every sighting is a treasure.
The Gamboa Rainforest Resort
The Gamboa Rainforest Resort, a true oasis in the heart of the jungle, is the epicenter of activity in this rainforest paradise. Whether it's enjoying a dip in the pool while overlooking the lush greenery or indulging in a spa day, this resort offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. In fact, I enjoy this spot of paradise so much, that after a wedding overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the mouth of the Panama Canal, we had our wedding reception at Gamboa Rainforest Resort.
The Discovery Center
One of the crown jewels of Gamboa is the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's Barro Colorado Island and the Gamboa Rainforest Discovery Center. These hubs of scientific research and ecological education offer a deeper understanding of the rainforest's importance and provide opportunities for hands-on learning and exploration.
The Aerial Tram
The Gamboa Rainforest Aerial Tram is an unforgettable adventure, and it's one of my favorite things to do in the rainforest. Suspended high in the canopy, you'll have a bird's-eye view of the rainforest's incredible biodiversity. It's not uncommon to spot sloths lounging in the treetops or colorful butterflies fluttering by. But the best part is the intense quietness you experience when you're part of the jungle canopy.
Panama's Cultural Riches
Despite its remote rainforest location, Gamboa is not isolated from Panama's rich culture. The local communities celebrate their traditions with festivals, music, and dance. The warmth of the people is tangible as they welcome you.
Sustainability in the Rainforest
Living in Gamboa has deepened my appreciation for the importance of conservation and sustainability. The rainforest's delicate ecosystem relies on responsible practices, and many initiatives here work to protect this precious environment. Living in Gamboa means every day is an adventure. I've become accustomed to the rhythm of the rainforest, from early morning hikes to canoe rides along the Chagres River. There's always something new to explore, whether it's a hidden waterfall or a secret trail deep into the jungle. Sustainable tourism is on the rise, offering travelers a chance to experience the beauty and wonder of the rainforest without compromising its future. I'm excited to see how Gamboa will continue to evolve.
The Miraflores Locks - A Glimpse of Panama's Past and Present
One of the most fascinating aspects of living in Gamboa is its proximity to the Panama Canal. A visit to the Miraflores Locks offers a glimpse into the history and operation of this engineering marvel. It's a reminder of Panama's role in global trade and its bright future. In fact, it's quite easy to visit both the Gamboa rainforest and the Miraflores Locks in the same day.
In closing, my life as an American expat in Panama has been an incredible journey. Some of my best memories in Panama have taken place in Gamboa Rainforest. I've discovered a profound appreciation for the rainforest's beauty and fragility. If you ever find yourself yearning for a life immersed in the wonders of the rainforest, Gamboa is one of the areas of Panama that is waiting to welcome you with open arms.
Here, the heart of the jungle beats in harmony with your own, creating an extraordinary, life-changing experience.
Until next time,
Cheers!
